Default Another losing oil thread... not a revup motor

I have a 2005 with the 287hp motor. I have been using Mobil 1 5w30 since my first oil change at 3000 miles. I change the oil every 3000 miles and use a Nissan filter. I currently have almost 19000 miles. I lose about 2 quarts in between changes. I check and top off the oil about every two weeks. I checked it last night and I was down about 1/2 a quart. I have only gone about 600 miles since I last changed my oil.

I have read just about every post I could find about this subject. Including the one that says Mobil 1 5w30 isn't good for the VQ. All that thread did was confuse the hell out of me. I ordered a sample kit from Blackstone and I plan on getting my oil analysed the next time I change it. That test will show how well the oil is protecting but it won't explain why it is burning off.

I guess my main question is should I be concerned about how much oil it is burning? Should I try a different oil to see if it burns less? One quart during 3000 miles I feel is normal but over that I don't think is.

I think I lose about 1/2 quart every 3,000 miles. If your under warranty, take it to the dealer.

Get a catch can. Watch how fast that thing collects.

I've also heard of oil escaping through the valve and they get stuck in the cats which is why we don't see blue smoke from our exhaust.

I thought about getting a catch can after I installed the spacer. I saw how much oil builds up in the plenum. Are there any "catch can kits" you guys could recommend?

I hope that is where the oil is going. I don't want to remove my mods just to have Nissan look at it.

Did you have your mods on at the time? Also, how long was the downtime?

My non revup is consuming just under a quart every 1000 miles.

I have a G35 coupe, so I'll have to go to an Infiniti dealer for this, I imagine.

As for catch can. I just did the home depot one found under the Engine's DIY section. better than those $100+ catch cans.

I'm consuming oil too. But I gave up trying to get a new engine out of it as local dealership isn't too willing to replace a new engine as well as having incompetent mechanics.

take it to the dealer and get your new motor while you're under warranty. I also have an 05 and was going through 2-3 quarts between oil changes. I also used Moblie 1 now I use Royal Purple in my new engine and no problems.

I think I am going to monitor my oil use closely until it is due to be changed again. So far I've added about 1/2 a quart since I changed the oil about 700 miles ago. In the mean time I will stop by a few dealers to talk to them about it.
Maybe I will try a different oil next change. I have heard a lot of good things about Penzoil Platinum 10w30 on this forum.
I am still looking into a catch can but I don't feel like doing anymore mods without talking to Nissan first.
