To answer the OP's question.. I'd have to go with Pennzoil Platinum over the Castrol Syntec. That being said, I don't have any UOA's done on the Syntec and there are a few weights I've been curious about. But, the PP 10W-30 is a great performing oil for regular oil changes.
I don't get the Royal Purpl hype at all. There is nothing that shows their oil to be any better, or even as good as, the other synthetics. Same for Motul, though. Both the UOA's done on the 300V and 8100 5W-30 aren't very good. Especially for the price.
Don't be swayed by the whole, "it's not a synthetic" or, "only Esters are the best base stock" arguments. If it was as simple as having the best base stock and a set amount of additives to make the best oil, then everyone would have basically the same formula. Some oils' formulation work better in the VQ35 than others. The top picks -based simply on the test results because I don't give a care for brand favorites- is:
Pennzoil Platinum 10W-30
Castrol GTX 5W-30
Mobil 1 0W-40
and if you like to order your oil, then:
Amsoil TSO (series 2000) 0W-30
Schaeffer's 5W-30
Any of the above will be GREAT in your engine. And because people seem to be asking me this a lot lately, I'll add that I am currently using Rotella T-Syn 5W-40 right now to get a UOA done on it. After that, it will be something else to get a UOA done on, maybe Castrol since there aren't any done besides the German Castrol 0W-30.
