With the rental car, I was close to $1,900.

Thanks Adam. I have a perpetual smile on my face now... Until I get used to this, and go for something more extreme. But ain't that the way it always works?! Lol~

I have a girl friend at work who mods and races M3s in various competitions. She's as fanatical about M3s as I am about Zs. We're gonna go out sometime & see how well my car does against hers. Lol~
nice! what year is hers? Always good to see more females get involved in modding/motorsports...makes life way easier for us guys! Next time we're down at Road Atlanta maybe I can get you guys some seat time in the ITS car

Aceman,

Just got my 4.08 gears installed in my 2006 Z. Would it help to have my ECU reflashed again?

The reason why I ask is that I could get to almost 40mph in 1st gear in the stock gears, now I can only get to barely 30 mph in first.

Not sure about the gears yet, since I live in AZ and it is like 110 degrees and I have the air conditioning running.

Any suggestions would be helpful

thanks

That's what shorter gearing does. It makes your gears... well... shorter. It's a mechanical thing, so no ECU reflash, unless you are talking about something else (like there is some history I don't know about). Iono, but what you describe seems normal for a 4.083 gear install.

you would ideally want to increase the rev limiter via some sort of ecu work (flash, utec, etc), to fully take advantage of the higher final drive ration

I have an appointment with Technosqure in a couple of weeks. But I was there before and I thought they already raised my rev limit, but my dyno chart after 6700 rpms my power takes an immediate dive.

Since I paid like $600 for the reflash, I'm going to see if they can do that part for free since it should have been done in November. I had the JWT Cams installed with the JWT valve springs and shims in case I wanted to raise the rev limiter I could do it.

The car is fun to drive, will have to wait till it gets a little cooler outside. I recommend the gears to anyone that wants them done, a great mod for people sticking with NA

Thanks Adam

wow this is great. i'm from the muscle car world and switching your ring and pinion gear is common. I'm glad import cars are doing this. just a little more expensive hehe. for the person that paid $1700.... LMAO!!!!

She's got a heavily modded '03 M3 and a relatively stock '05 M3. Her hubby is into modding C5 Z06 vettes. I would love to check out an ITS car sometime. Thanks Adam~ :-)

I gotta get this car stuff outta my system before I have kids and turn into a mini-van drivin' nester. Lol~

Is this at 7600rpm? I'm able to get get 98mph in 3rd with my 3.91 @ 7300rpm. I was thinking about going with the 4.08's after I swap cams again but I may have to reconsider.

it will drop the top speed per gear by about 4%, which is the ~ difference between 3.9 and 4.08

I wish I'd been able to install and try mine, this seems like one of the more noticeable improvements you can do to these cars.

Do these 4.083 gears push you back in your seat alot more than stock?

yeah. you're going to be going through your gears a lot sooner than versus stock as well. i went from 3.27 (different car) to 4.30 before. the regular nitto 555's that i had at the time won't even grip, let alone the stock clutch that was slipping, and it was still slamming me back in my seat. my truck that i had i went from 3.73 to 4.56's. not as much difference as my car, but still had the effect. gas mileage difference = hardly any change.

Ok, because I am still confused on what I am doing with them. I do already have the gears but I need to install and buy the install kits so there is another 750. I am hoping they will hold me off for FI because for the price of FI I can get sooo much more crap for my Z and still have my Z be decently fast.. + more looks.

You need to make sure you aren't going to go FI before you put in these gears.

If you install 4.08 gears and later decide to go FI, you might end up removing the gears.
