Exclamation 7,000 RPM 350 at the Stillen meet

At the Stillen meet a guy was getting his car dynoed, no big deal one of like 30 cars dynoed that day. The person runing the dyno brought the car slowly up to the 6,600 mark and let off. Just like he had been doing for everyone else that day. The owner of the car told the guy to go all the way next time, not back off the gas. The guy started the run. I watch the RPM's build up to the 6,600 mark where to my surprise the car kept going all the way up to 7,ooo. There it didn't hit a fuel shut off just banged off a rev limiter. I was like damn he has a chip or something. I asked the ower of the car about it. He said that it was a chip that they were testing but, could not talk about it. I never did get to see his dyno sheet, did anyone here get a look? Man did the car sound sweet at 7,ooo rpm's, I can't wait till what ever he was working on is out on the market.

Hey failsaf3 what's up? I can't remember what color Z it was exactly, I'll have to ask Chris (CMJ) tomorrow. He was an older (28-35) Asian guy. Chris was number 11 on the dyno, this guy was way before him. I would guess him to be like 5 or something. I don't think he stayed after his car was done.

7K RPM? I don't know, but that sounds like a death wish if you ask me. I thought Nissan specifically designed their newer engine so it would be economical to make using good material, but at the same very good performance. That is why all their new car make good power, but redline really earily. 6,200 for the SE-R (QR25DE), and 6,600 for the VQ35DE.

Other NA car such as Honda makes about the same power as the Nissan engine, but then they redline really late, which are high performance, but at the same time expansive to manufacture.

And I think the problem lies in the block, and it isn't something that can be easily changed. Thats why even mines with their N/A upgrade still achieve max power of 330HP at 6,400 RPM, because they didn't go outside of the 6,600RPM redline.

I am sure you can get a chip to remove the rev limiter completely, like those Honda Accord that REV to 10K, and it might even make some more power, but for how long, no idea.

But for sure the VQ will sound awsome at 7k. Imangine one day when some crazy manufacture will over hall the engine and get it into the 8k or 9k range....ouch.
I don't think it is wise to take the stock internal and run it past the redline. Now 400RPM isn't alot more honestly, but on forth gear (when on the dyno), then it is.

I think you are right about that. I didn't see the dyno sheet for my self, so I don't want to talk out my ***. My friend Chris did notice that the car didn't really make any HP gains by going up to 7,000 RPM. I would get the "Chip" or whatever it was to ge rid of that damn fuel shut off, not so I could rev up to 7k all the time.

Smile That Older Asian Guy

Ha, that was me. Man I guess I am old gauging from how many teens have a 350Z.

It revved to 7100 RPM and made 243 WHP (second in line btw). I've been busy with some work and out-of-town friends or I'd have posted sooner. From what I recall that is about what Cheston's car makes. My car had around 3K miles and seems that cars with 5K+ make more in stock form than other low mileage stockers.

Though my car clearly doesn't make the best use of the higher revving, the valve train sounds really nice and there aren't audible sounds of rough combustion. My friends Ryan and Aaron have JWT's cams and boy could they ever use the extra headroom! They made 263 WHP and the tell-tale tapering of power was nowhere to be seen!
