Default slipped out of 2nd - What the?!

Hey guys,

I was comming around a round-a-bout this morning, in 2nd gear and my hand on the stick ready to zoom out and go into 3rd- as you do. Anyway, half way through the manuevor, it had just slipped out of second into netural, my foot was off the clutch, and my hand was only on the stick shifter, with virtually no pressure- it sounds so far-fetched but it basically did it on its own.

I just wanted to throw it out there to see if anyone has had this happen, I'm not thinking too much of it as it's only the first time it's happend, but I just want to make sure it can't be anything serious?

My only thoughts so far is that, being a black car- it's haunted and an inner spirit within the car is going to slowly drive me (no pun intended) paranoid and crazy.

-Jerry

PS as you can imagine- when it went into neautral my foot was on the gas, it revved like crazy and I looked like another young kid who cant drive his z.

Yup it happened to me. I was trying to make a U turn and I was going fast because I was trying to beat the light. So downshifted to 2nd and it popped back to neutral. I heard a noise I might have grinded it or something. It only happened to me once though.

I hate it when this happens. Try some heavy downshifts into second then back the gas out quickly. If it pops out of gear something is wrong and you'll have to have someone break open that box to fix it. ;-(

Looks like you should still be under warranty, go get it checked out if it happens again!

I haven't experienced anything like that yet, just some annoying clutch chatter

It's definitely a very notchy gear... I feel like I'm hurting something when I shift to it sometimes. It has worked fine thus far thogh

Hey guys,

My 2nd has been in perfect form, no grinding or annoying sounds like a lot of others have experienced in 350z's over the yeras. For this reason I always kept it in 2nd gear when the car was parked over-night. I'm going to run with this as being a one off. Thanks for the responses!

Correct me if Im wrong...but thats normal. When your at the right speed, you can shift to neutral in any gear w/o clutch.

Yes at the correct RPM you can push it into neutral with no clutch, but it shouldn't do so on its own.

This happens periodically with mine in just about any gear, always when
coasting to a stop with my feet completely off the clutch and gas pedals.

Hasn't really been a problem since I have to downshift anyway, but I'm sure it isn't supposed to do that. Driving an 03, on my second tranny already.

I have a hard time getting into 2nd gear when the car is cold (within 5 min of startup). Have to pull the shifter pretty hard, but never hear any grinding, etc. It has popped out of 2nd a few times -- usually within a few seconds of shifting into 2nd, but again, only when it is cold.

Once the car has warmed up, 2nd isn't a problem.

i only got problems with second when its cold or when im pushing 1st( around 6k) and try to shift into second, but i think its just the shift gates. as far as it popping out thats weird since there no mechanical parts that would force it out. i do feel that there is a two stage process getting it in second, ,maybey you only had it in second partially
