It does look like the spring that goes inside the timing chain cover....try posting it in the FI section. You will probably get a quicker answer. I'm taking my timing covers off this afternoon to put some polished ones on and if you don't have an answer by tonight I'll let you know if that is the spring that goes inside there.

the spring or the bolt? the spring should be on the timing chain adjuster/tensioner somewhere (not completely sure where). just look into the FSM or ESM. hopefully if youre rebuilding your own motor you have the documentation

Theres only one thing in the whole motor that uses a small spring like that. It belongs in the secondary timing chain tensioner. If you have only one in hand, take off both tensioners and compare springs to see if they are alike, if so, it belons to tensioner.

99.9% it was in the bags he gave me. I wonder if it came from the inside of the VTC adjuster.I had to get a new one after he took it apart.

This is why you don't pick up where someone left off...

It's hard to determine things at that point

So what happened with the primary tensioner? did you check that. if thats not it, and you have an 03-05 motor, then it doesnt belong here. Ive built my own block and ive only seen 2 springs. both for the secondary tensioners.

I hope to be getting the covers off today, so I'll let you know. In the meantime shoot Quadcam a PM with the pic. He knows just about every part that comes on the VQ and his motor is apart at this time...he's a very smart guy

I was thinkign it is the spring in the tensioner for the small timing chain that goes around the cam gears......but you said you have those springs and plungers in place............

as far as taking apart the intake cam phaser, Jeremy and I took one apart abouta year ago, but I don't rememebr exactly how it was setup inside. all I remember was that once you took it apart, you could pretty much forget getting it back together.

soory...I'm not much help on this one.
