Default CLUTCH/FLYWHEEL for 650whp?

what do you suggest? looking to spend as little as possible!!! already over budget on my build.

im thinking act heavy duty 6-puck sprung and prolite flywheel?

any other suggestions? anything cheaper?

what about flywheel chatter? do i have to balance everything including flywheel to prevent the chatter? which flywheel can i use to stay away from chatter? this will be a street class, with occasional track days.. hoping for about 650whp.

thanks

If you're going to be making 650 rwhp I would recommend going with a multi plate clutch. They are expensive but in the long run I think you will be much better off. A single plate clutch that can handle that power level is going to require a LOT of clamping force. We have a customer car here now that made 601 rwhp on pump gas and will be 700+ on race gas, and we used an Exedy Carbon triple disc in it. By going with a multi plate you don't have to buy a flywheel seperately.

After more experience with a Carbonetics triple disc clutch, I'd recommend people go with the Exedy clutch. I'm close to being sure that the Carbonetics clutch/flywheel may have been the source of all the issues I've had with my car since last year.

My tuner originally steered be to the JWT clutch when I was going to stick with a stock block and go for 400 rwhp. When I decided to build the short block and shoot for 650 rwhp, he indicated that he did not think the JWT would be sufficient.

I now have a Clutchmasters FX600 twin disc clutch in my car, but I haven't tested it yet as we had been waiting for some stragling components to complete the build. The FX600 is supposed to provide a 300%-600% increase in holding capacity over a stock clutch, which should be more than adequate for 650 hp. List price on the FX600 is $1800, which includes the flywheel. I got it for less from my tuner, but I bought a lot of things all at once.

I have spoken with the guys at clutchmasters and they are very knowledgable. It may be worth it for you to give them a call.

At the time I was looking for a clutch I also came accross another clutch company, Fidanza, that is coming out with a twin disc clutch for our cars at a very good price (they said somewhere north of $1100, but didn't indicate how far north). The clutch was still in R & D at that time (about 3 months ago). However, it may be released by now, or close to it. You might want to contact them as well.

it would not come close to handling 600 whp

at that power level, you have to pay to play

Screw these single haters. I have an ACT 6 puck sprung for 7k miles with 30+ drag passes and heavy street driving at 19psi (greddy) and it has NEVER slipped. The clutch has far surpassed my expectations and it isnt even that bad to drive on. It has held more power then it is rated for and does it without skipping a beat. It takes some getting use, but a good day of driving and you will have it figured out. Mine is actually for sale if you want it and new disk are only $100. I also have the ACT Streetlite flywheel, both are for sale.

I'm far from being a "hater" - but in terms of it lasting at that power level, it won't. If you are ok with doing a new clutch every 10-15k miles, then maybe its a good option. For those who want a more "install it and forget it", there are better choices, albeit it at a higher cost. Like anything else, it's up the end user to decide what their primary goals are

I agree, I was being more sarcastic with the haters comment. I honestly never expected the ACT to hold how its holding. Who knows how long it will last, but its has done a damn good job so far and I dont expect it to go out soon. For someone like me that can do all the work myself and just swap out disk if it slipped, it seemed like the best option at the time. I dont drive my car daily, but on the weekends it gets used a fair amount. I dont putt around either.

Check this out. I think it is a great deal at $1,000 for a good twin disc clutch...

Also look at my post there. I have a FX600 and I am very happy with it. The only difference is the discs that are used. The FX700 allows more hp than the FX600...

I fried my Clutchmasters FX600 launching at 3k-4k rpm at around 12 psi of boost...

i'm gonna try the ACT 6 puck wheneer I get around to building my motor.

I have the act street clutch with prolite flywheel now...and it has been great for 2 years of 400 ftlb of torque and 25,000 miles of driving.

Competition Clutch Stage 4 has held some really good power for us. It's a good budget choice. The red Z that is featured on our fancy new T shirts...is running the Comp Stage 4 with STOCK flywheel. Quite and smooth as butter, but held 550whp on the hearbreaker without an issue.
