Pathfinder VQ35DE block same as 350z block?
So a guy I work with has a few vq35de blocks, but they are from pathfinders/altimas. I am wondering if anyone knows if the blocks themselves are the same as the 350z block, as in, will the oilpan and heads bolt on to the block or are they completely different blocks.
The nissan part numbers for the blocks are different so im guessing no.. but you never know.

What year Pathfinder? The 01-02 VQ35 pathfinder is pretty different from the 350Z and even the FWD ones. It is more like a VQ30. The early VQ35s don't have DBW, the VVT sprockets are much smaller, and the intake ports are, I think VQ30 style.
As far as the blocks, The heads should bolt up. Although I think they have flat top pistons and thus 10.0:1 compression ratio vs. the more standard 10.3:1. The oil pan should bolt up. But I have no idea about the engine mounts or anything else.

The short blocks are indeed very similar, except for the bore diameter/sleeves. Not including some casting details and RWD and FWD differences, but the long "block" as a whole including timing chain setup, heads, etc. are pretty different. Most of it is swappable, as I am doing, but still different.
I was not, and am still not positive as to what he was asking. If he was asking if he could take the engine out of the pathfinder and just drop it into the 350Z, then no, but if he stripped it down to the bare short block and rotating assembly as I think he was asking then yes you could, but I think the rods and pistons are probably different and the CR would be lower.
In short, yes I think the blocks are similar enough to put something together, but I am not sure if it would be worthwhile without changing pistons and maybe the rods.

basically i am asking are the block and crank usable if I was to sell the block to someone looking to build the block for a 350z vq35. So you are saying that if changing pistons and rods, which someone would do for a motor build, then it is feasible?
thanks for the help

I might very well be wrong with this, but I remember hearing that the vq40 is a taller deck height than the vq35. Getting it to fit in the Z would be difficult. It would be both wider and taller.
Although, with solid motor mounts, an HR hood, and creative header design that could be an interesting option since the vq40 would like to rev higher than a comparable vq35.
