Default How do I tell if the pumpkin has VLSD?

Hi im looking to swap out my rear diff, the whole pumpkin, for another with a vlsd. So im wondering if there is anyway i can tell any markings or numbers on the actual pumpkin that tell me whether its equipped with a vlsd or the base open diff? because i am picking this up next week from someone i dont know, who tells me its off of a 04 350z 6spd. I dont want to just rely on his words hoping someone knows something i can look for. thanks.

not that I know of. When I did my swap they were identical from what I saw. You may be able to test it with your hands.

from what i understand the base model doesnt have LSD... every other model (enthusiast, touring, etc.) does... only 99% sure though..

edit: oh i see what you're asking, not sure if theres anyway to tell on the actual pumpkin itself... sorry.

If you have the pumpkin out of the car...the best way to tell if it is a vlsd or not is to turn the stub shafts (axles). Grab both of them at the same time. The vlsd will make the axles feel locked together. If it has a base model open diff you will be able to turn one shaft and the other one will want to spin in the opposite direction.

First, chock the front wheels and jack the rear of the car up. Then, put the transmission in gear, so that the driveshaft won't move. Next, release the e-brake. With both rear wheels off the ground, turn either rear wheel. If the other rear wheel turns the same direction, you have a VLSD. If it turns the opposite direction, you have an open differential.

ok so opposite directions is open diff and same direction is the vlsd. cause the only test i can do before i put it in is test with my hands.
so this is correct?
thanks for the help guys.

well i baught the bloody thing but i think its an open diff because both axles spin in the opposite direction the guy was assuring me it was out of a loaded z that had vdc etc so it has to be the vlsd hes sayin. and since its not full locking like an aftermarket lsd and its viscous i dunno what i was thinkin i thought maybe u cant test it the same way? so i might be stick with it now.

If it spins relatively easy, and in opposite directions, it is an open diff... the vsld has some resistance to it (if spinning by hand it will take a little effort) and like Z_ology stated, the stubs will want to spin together in the same direction

yah its gotta be an open diff then they spin relatively easy in the opposite direction. they spin in the same direction only when i spin the part where the driveshaft connects but i think thats normal and has nuthing to do with it.

just to make sure guys these are properties of an LSD that you are telling me correct? but since this is a vsld and works a little different should it still have the exact same characteristics when it comes to turning the shafts by hand? just want to make sure so if i have to ill go back and throw it at the guy and get my money back. dont want to install it either and pay the mechanic if its something i already have lol.

I would say with 99% certainty it is an open diff. I swapped mine and know the characteristics of them on the car and testing them by hand.
