Gas: not what octane, but what purveyor?
A.) So who do you guys buy your gas from? I use Chevron cause of the Techron stuff, but I can also imagine that Techron is pretty useless, and I've heard they all use the same gas anyway. Any opinions?
B.) I use 91 octane cause that's what the manual says to use. But, whats the difference between this and "racing fuel" that gives the engine better horsepower. I ask because it seems to me any gas that automatically gives better HP would also be more volatile, thereby in my mind more likely to cause predetonation like lower octane fuels.

My choices in the Midwest are 87/89/93 and 94 at Sunoco which is where I always go if available. Usually 93 but 94 if I know I am going to be pushing things a bit, like a club cruise. Probably all in my head that it adds any kind of power. Or Shell 93 on the road. And racing fuel will do nothing for your HP and is probably not good for the motor/cats either. Or so say all the experts

One interesting approach I saw from a member on the other board is that he doesn't stick with a single brand, but changes between like Shell, Chevron, Texaco. Diversifying -- so if one brand is crap quality, it just averages out with the other brands and doesn't muck up his engine.

racing fuel really only does things on a car built/tuned to take advantage of it. putting it in a stock car isnt going to do much at all if anything... and depending on which racing fuel you use, could have negative effects with long term use.

1) 95% Chevron, unless in an unfamiliar area and low in gas.
And always 91 octane.
It's correct that the actual gas may be the same between different companies (aside from different blends, winter gas etc), but the main difference is in the additives. A Valero station for example can sign a contract to get gas from a Chevron terminal (location where the tankers fill up) due to location/freight cost or watever, but will have the basic additive mixed instead of techron. The additive is mixed as the gas is pumped into the gasoline trucks. A certain percentage of 87 and 91 is mixed together to create 89 when trucks fill up. And only a chemical engineer can provide real proof of whether or not techron is 'useless'. I would believe that those chemEs know what their doing.

Wow I just use Shell, Velero, 76. Don't really matter. Never noticed any difference using 91 on any gas station.

I never have, and don't actually ever plan on using racing fuel, though if anyone knows I'd be interested in the difference; as I said before, as far as I can figure, a gas that's volatile enough to give greater HP would also be volatile enough to enough to cause predetonation, though I'm no physicist.

Texaco is same as chevron... As well as CalTex in Asia. Both owned by Chevron and I would assume they have the techron additive as well.
