Default Stop AT automatic down shift in manual mode

Is there any way to avoid or to stop the automatic transmission to automatically down shift when reducing speed or reaching a stop? I like to drive in MM but when in heavy traffic... if I was driving, lets say in 4th, while slowing down the tranny might reduced by itself to 3rd. Since I was assuming I was going in 4th I down shifted manually going down to 2nd because tranny downshifting. I would like that the tranny would keep the shift until I decide to change it. Is this possible?

Yes. Get a 350Z with a manual transmission.

Huh! Never thought about this... thanks for such an excellent idea

You never know, there is nothing wrong in asking. I'm just a victim of my wife "wanting" to drive my car which never did. I shouldn't have listen to her and bought it manual.

ok so I had to see what mine does
manual mode 4th gear
shifts to 3rd at 25mph
drops to 1st at 10mph

I dont see the problem. . . seems perfectly acceptable to me

I prefer to use manual mode and downshift to a usable gear based on my speed. . . and the main reason I dont use the auto mode is that I dont wanna be in 4th @25mph

not sure if year makes a diff mine is an 08

Well the auto does that to protect itself from stalling. It seems llike a plausible idea.

So what if you decide you want to only downshift on your own but you don't do it at the right speed/rpms..you could more than likely stall the auto tranny.

I dunno about that... With the wide range of the torque converter and engine torque i'm sure the car could start from a standstill in 5th without too much trouble. I'm having some sort of overheating issue on hillclimbs causing the trans to put itself in 4th gear and stay. I've come to a complete stop and started off again in 4th gear and it moved fine... No jutter, no weird noises, just a good force pushing the car forward. Don't know how nice that is on the engine though.

There is a reason we have more than 1 gear. Lugging the engine puts a great deal of stress on the motor. NOT recommended. Do a google search on "lugging the engine" if you wish to research it.

The auto downshift is a safety feature that prevents lugging the engine for folks that believe that they should start the car from 5th gear.

I wouldn't recommend what your proposing for others, very bad on the engine in the long run.

OP, you should leave it in Auto mode in heavy traffic, that's what it's for.

Yeah I wasn't recommending it either, just stating the engine has the power to handle it. But like I said at the very end, I doubt it is good for the engine. I'm sure that type of driving will have a negative affect in the future.
