Diff question.
2003 Track w/82k mi
swapped out to 4.08 final, was told to change diff. fluid after 300mi.
waited about 1250mi before finally getting to diff fluid change.
diff started making howling/grinding noise after about 1000 mi.
dont ask me why i put it off so long, *** me right...
money was tight and i would tell myself tomorrow tomorrow tomorrow...
diff is 90% blown and need a new one.
main concern is if the 4.08s are ruined or its another internal making that sound?
any similar situations?
thoughts, i dont care about flamin i know i fuked it up, one way to learn i guess.
thanks

does anyone know if the postponement of the fluid change is severe enough to cause noticeable damage or put stress on the other internals enough to damage??

Samething happen to me. I installed 3.9 gears. Replaced all bearings and after 750 miles hoooooowlllllllll. I put the 3.5's back in with the same bearings and shims and get a perfect gear tooth pattern. I chalk it up to an installation error on my part. Maybe not getting the pinion depth correct. But everyone I talked to said that when they install their gears they rarely change the pinion depth. Sometimes you just get a bad (soft) set of gears.

honestly no
I installed a dif at the same time. I did my figure eights and then changed the fluid. I then drove 750 miles (was supposed to change at 500). I don't think that the extra 250 miles destroyed the R&P.
I could be wrong but I am almost certain it was a bad set of gears or setup.

hmm ill have to look into that. i had a local Z shop do it so i assumed they knew what they were doin.
ya cause i waited almost 1000mi after i was supposed to change it..
they said the fluid was about half gone and was silver from all the metal shavings when they changed it at 1250mi after install...

If the fluid was half gone then something mechanical is wrong or they didn't fill it all the way. The silver fluid would be somewhat normal for a R&P brake in.
If it got hot enough to burn that much fluid then it would be obvious. The metal inside would tell the tell.

I know for a fact that another guy on here had the same problem and install was done by a VERY reputable shop here on the forums, one of the best for the Z imo.
As far as i know, as of yet they couldnt fix the noise problem. Do a search and you will find the thread.

If you had nothing to due with the install. They should at least warranty their work this should be separate from any manufacture type warranty. If you have been going there for awhile then they will probably eat the cost to satisfy a loyal costumer. But you are going to have to make a big deal. I don't mean a temper tantrum but a tactful big deal!!!
