Default Lighter Flywheel good for AT?

Would a lighter flywheel work well for an AT as well?

An automatic does not have a flywheel. This part you are referring to is for the MT models.

Doesn't the torque converter attach to the flywheel? Or are you saying an automatic magically moves by an invisiable force.

Engine-flywheel-TC-Trans-driveshaft-differential-axles-wheels.

I have removed and installed both manuals and autos - all beit Jeeps, but wouldn't Nissans work the same?

the AT has a flex plate, not a flywheel. The flex plate is in place of the flywheel, but I have not heard of people getting lighter flex plates. I think they are already pretty light, and no further reduction can be done without seriously reducing reliability.

Thank you! I never realized the name was different for the FW and FP. Thanks again. On my Jeeps, the AT plate is quite heavy. I am still looking for a way to improve on the transmission. Maybe a throttle body upgrade. Firmer shifts would be nice.

Thanks again for the answer.

An automatic has a torque converter. TWo fan like things oppose each other in a viscous liquid. This is basically the manual tranny equivalent of flywheel - clutch. The engine spins one of these fans, which at lower rpm does not make the opposing one turn. Then at some point the fans pressure makes the liquid less viscous and the other fan has to turn. Thats basically an AT in simple terms.

yup, face 2 fans towards each other, turn one on very low, the other does nothing, turn it up and the other will begin to spin as well.

this is the same principal of a torque converter. of course with much less loss with a thicker fluid than air, and a closed circuit, but none the less the second fan will always spin a little slower than the powered fan. but now a days eventually the fans lock together, but not at low RPMs.

Instead of wanting a flywheel you should get a new torque converter. I think B&M makes torque converters, but you'd probably have to get a custom setup.

Thanks for all the great replies. My point about the magic force was directed toward the lack of flywheel or rather flexplate. This is what actually spins converter, correct? The engine rotates the plate which is bolted to the converter. This in turn, rotates the input shaft on transmission. My thought was a new plate that is lighter would help as a lighter flywheel helps the MT's.

Hell ATI makes TCs too. TCI as well. Why don't you buy the procharger and see if they will give you a TC half price.

Well, I started searching the "other" VQ35 websites. Seems there are upgrades for the valve body and soon a new TC, as well as completely rebuilt transmissions.

As far as the supercharger, I am not sure I will go this route. I am waiting for other options - Like turbos. For know I will start with the transmission.
