Clutch comparisons for ACT, Exedy, and JWT
My stock clutch is starting to go and I'm going to replace it with a single disk. These are the three I have narrowed it down to that I would like to purchase. Does anybody have any experience with these? I searched but did not find much. I'm leaning towards the ACT only because I have used this clutch before on a different car.
I'm looking for something to be able to hold some bolt ons which I also plan to do shortly.
Do any of these lower the engagement point from the stock top location of the pedal? I HATE it that high.
How on/off are these clutches?
Will the stock flywheel mate up to them or do you suggest I buy an aftermarket one?
Thanks!!

you can adjust the height of the pedal, search the forums for a tut.
The clutch doesn't affect the pedal height. IMO get an aftermarket clutch so you won't have to later

all will work with the stock flywheel, but if your there installing a clutch, now's the time......
do you do any track events? etc.......if so, then i say get the light weight flywheel.
I like the JWT clutch. its confidence inspiring and you can still slip it, but to me its a good on/off and holds when drifting.
I like the JWT fly wheel because the matting surface is replaceable........and its only like 60 bucks............in my mind both clutch and fly are wear and tear items and i know ill be replacing them a few times.
aarons right about pedal height adjustment.......you can adjust it...

On a hyradualic clutch, like the Z, as they wear, the release point gets higher and higher. Eventually one day, it won't release at all
As far as a comparison, I can give you some insight, I've used all of them on the 2003-2006 cars. First question though, what year is your car?

Gotcha
Al of the clutches you listed will work with the factory flywheel. Many choose to replace the flywheel when they do the clutch, since it's the same labor time either way.
The JWT is a nice driving clutch, holds a good amount of torque more than the factory unit, and is easy to modulate. The ACT holdsthe most torque of the ones mentioned, is a bit stiffer of a pedal (very similar to the early 03 cars if you've ever driven those). The Exedy is not as popular, but has about 25% more torque threshhold than stock and a moderate pedal. Any of them will work just fine for bolts on, or even boost down the road, so it comes down to price and availability. All of them are quite easy to drive. I find myself the smoothest with the ACT, but I've used it more than the others as well, so I am a bit more used to it. I don't think you would have a hard time with any of them though, as they are all basically step 1 type upgrades from stock.
As far as adjusting the engagement point. Is it adjustable? Yes and no. There is a range that it needs to be set to. You can refer to the factory manual, or if you need it, let me know and I can try to post the link. If you try to deviate from the range, you run the risk of prematurely wearing the clutch.

What are you planning to do with the car? As a DD?
I like the pedal feel on the ACT clutch on my maxima...heavy duty pressure plate 6 puck spring disc. Probably just use to it since I learned how to drive stick with a heavy duty clutch back in the day.
I picked up a JWT clutch and flywheel combo that I'm planning to put in the Z. Hoping its not too soft since I like the pedal feel stiffer than stock. A lot of FI Z guys that I know are using this clutch and no problems with it what so ever.
Good luck in picking out a clutch.

Thanks guys. For now the car is a dd and I prefer driving with a stiffer clutch because I learned with the ACT street/strip in my RX-7. I've tried adjusting the clutch but it just keeps finding its way back to the top. I'm still not sure which one I'm going to pick but I appreciate the input from everybody. I will let you know which one I decide to go with.

I would pick up the ACT since you like the stiffer clutch. I'm pretty sure ACT is stiffer than JWT but then again...it might depend on the type of cars..i know for a fact in the maxima community, jwt clutch pedal feel isnt stiff compared to ACT.
oh wow..rx-7? 3rd gen?

I decided to go with the ACT and the stock flywheel. I will be ordering it within 2 weeks and will leave my feedback for future reference once I have driven it. Thanks for all the input guys!
