Unhappy cant jump start my 2003 track model....

the car has been sitting for about 4 months. I've jumped it before with no issues, but today, no go...

everything was set up..jump cables hooked up to other car, lights and radio etc in the Z were on...ready to start the z...

then when I turn the key, everything shuts off in the Z...absolutely nothing is on anymore.

disconnected the jump cables, and retried from scratch, but this time nothing turns on in the Z, no radio, interior lights, nothing...

could I have popped a main fuse or something? any info is appreciated. thanks.

ap

battery is about 2 years old..I dont think thats it.

and when I say lights, I meant the usual interior lights, not my headlights.

forgot to mention that I dont even hear any clicks either when turning the key...absolutely nothing is on....

thanks for the reply though...

Yes, interior lights would turn on when hooked to other car. Like others have said, sounds like you need a new battery...

How good are the jumper cables? I've seen some that are made with copper-clad steel wire and copper-clad aluminum wire. The connections to the clamps tend to be pretty bad, too.

Check for voltage drops across all the connections one at a time. I think you'll find a bad connection is causing the symptoms you describe.

2 year old battery doesn't matter, nothing lasts forever, it could still be bad. Jumping the car may still not matter if the battery is that weak. Test the battery. Also make sure the terminals are good and tight on the posts; you should not be able to move them if they are tight.

The battery is def possibly bad, but if he is *correctly* hooked up to another car to jump him, the current should still be flowing to his car no matter if his battery is dead or even not hooked up.

If your battery isn't a deep cycle battery letting it sit and drain damages the life of it, so no matter if its a year old if you don't properly take care of it, it can go bad. And you said you've jumped it before, so it seems like this isn't the first time.

You sure you didn't hook up the cables backwards? That will definitely blow some fuses at minimum. Like winchman said, (if you didn't blow all kinds of fuses or more) then you got a bad connection, and since your interior lights won't even come on now its most likely at the source. Check the jumper cables, make sure the the connection on the other cars battery and yours are good and not all corroded, and check the fuses they aren't hard to get to.

And then I think you got the point from everyone to go out and at least test your battery, then most likely get a new one

My battery just died last week. The acid inside was frozen and therefore obviously not capable of generating power itself, but it still started. I had advance keep it for a day and let it thaw out and charge it and it worked fine. Mine is also factory on my 06 so....it's probably about due anyway.

Are you hooking the cables up correctly. The negative lead on the dead car should go to ground and not the negative terminal. That way it will fire up, independent of your batteries condition.

thank you all for the ideas.

I've jumped this z a few times already after long sits....black was grounded on the z.

i've looked at all the fuses, even the ones connected to the positive terminal...none of them looked open or blown; i didnt pull the fuses from the + terminal though, just looked at them.

to restate the issue, the first time i connected the jumper cables, all seem well and as usual....interior lights and radio turned on in the Z. Turned the key, heard a couple clicks, then everything went dead.

unhooked the jumper cables and retried, this time, no lights, radio at all, just dead from the get go....no juice at all getting to the Z from the other car.

gonna pull the battery and positive terminal fuses today for in depth look.

I'll keep posted...thanks all.

Does the bass in your stereo cut out when it hits? Sure sign of a bad battery as well

this is what I thought too. checked all fuses in the three locations..all fine.
fusible link on positive terminal seem ok too; doesn't look open. there are these 'soccer' ***** in the fusible link but they looked closed...not sure if that's normal.

anyways will pick up a new battery and new jumper cables tomorrow to try to rule things out.

as of now I am stumped.

"there are these 'soccer' ***** in the fusible link..."

Doesn't sound normal to me. You need to check it out with a meter to see if there is a voltage drop across the link. Don't do an ohms check without disconnecting the battery. There may be 12 volts across the link, and that'll blow your meter.
