just bought 04 z, wanted to do something to it to gain more hp and dont know what to start first. (please help) also heard that aftermarket intake either short ram or CAI wont do any better than the stock one, is it true???

I suggest you spend a good amount of time browsing the Tech section and reading the useful threads. Make your own decisions. It's your money.

Basically there are no "good" cheap performance mods, so keep that out of the question.
Probably the lowest pricing upgrade, besides intake, would be a plenum spacer. These go for around $300 and you will see 10-12hp gains. They are also relatively easy to install.
The most recommended company to go with would be Motordyne. Their parts have been dyno'd plenty of times against other leading companies, and came out on top.
