Has anyone ever read this section from the manual and actually tried it?

As i use my 350z for my DD, there are places where it's just not a fun drive and i don't want to use any more fuel than i need to, i like to save that for the fun parts

However, i consider myself able to judge where an engine feels most comfortable, and generally best for fuel economy.

Some of those shift speeds are crazy low (in my opinion) yet, when i tried the higher gears on my cruise to work, i noticed i'm getting higher MPG on the gauge.

Has anyone else tried this?

 

you dont need a manual you need to learn it on your own.

no one goes by that bullsh*t and of course they are gonna make the shift speeds low, they dont wanna be responsible for you blowing up your sh*t.

2nd to 3rd is funny though, i used to do easily double that before shifting

when your at redline its time to shift, pretty simple concept

 

on the street i usually cruise on 6th gear after 40 mph on level roads of miami and thats crazy low rpm already (right above 1500 rpm). that chart says 6th by 33 mph id stall... poor engine. on average i shift by 3k rpm to conserve gas

"For quick acceleration" section listed shifting up through 6th gear and still not getting over 50mph.

 

thats way to much shifting to get to 33mph

 

Wow if you need that book you shouldn't own a manual.

 

Agreed... I shift below 3k so the locals don't know I'm boosted.

 

F saving gas that's alot of shifting that could be saved.

Just go 1->3->6

Remember these manuals have to be written with the average idiot in mind, they buy cars too i'm afraid

I'm looking at these numbers with a mind to testing their theory of better gas mileage, so i'm experimenting with shifting earlier, though, not quite as early as they're suggesting. However, my cruising speed/gear i am paying attention to this, like i said, it's an experiment.

I too would imagine it would get worse gas mileage apparently lugging the engine that way, but, so far in my testing, it's proving true.

Starting in second gear is either more slipping the clutch, or more lugging the engine. This isn't the same thing.

And no, it's not another MPG thread. As i wrote in the first post, this about the crazy recommendations in the owners manual, which, if you read the writing above the speeds, does state, THESE RELATE TO FUEL ECONOMY AND PERFORMANCE

Either way, from over 15 years of only driving manual, i would have said that following these instructions would result in bad performance and bad fuel economy.

So far, in my 2 days of testing, i've upped the MPG indicator by nearly 3 MPG from normal, it's just very bizarre driving this way.

I will stress that, for the most part, i ignored the through gears speed, i just changed about 2500 RPM and just used the cruise speed for gears.

In short, it meant i ended up cruising in a gear higher than i would have picked normally.


I just figured this was interesting and wondered if anyone else had seen/tried it and maybe gotten the same results.

 

I've now looked over that picture three times just trying to grasp the concept of shifting into 6th at 33mph.

 

Our cars have torque, works just fine.

 

Either way, most engines don't develop their usable power down there, 6th at 33/35 mph, is under 1500 RPM.

It works so long as you're not accelerating or going up hill. As i said, i'm just using them for cruising speeds right now, round town, it seems to help noticeably.
