Default Having trouble getting drive shaft back in

Hey Guys,

I'm trying to wrap up my forever-long turbo build, but I'm having a little bit of trouble getting the driveshaft back into the transmission.

The shaft had a bit of oxidation on it from sitting out near the draft of a door for a long time, but I cleaned it of pretty good with a wire brush. I cleaned the splines before trying to install it as well.

I had a buddy over last night to help force it in. We're able to wiggle it in millimeters at a time, but it's extremely exhausting. We've probably got about 1/3 of an inch left before I can bolt it back up to the pumpkin.

I'm starting to feel like I'm doing something wrong, since I don't remember ever seeing anyone complain about the driveshaft, and a quick search didn't come up with anything either.

Any suggestions on what I could have messed up? Should I try cleaning the splines again?

you sure your clutch is aligned properly when you attached the pressure plate?

Yep, clutch alignment tool was in up until I put the transmission back on.

Getting the transmission back in wasn't smooth as butter though, but it didn't feel unnatural.

Lube? I've had mine out several times for months at a time and never had any issues with it sliding back into the trans housing. It may be a PITA, but a pic of said oxidation would be helpful.

Should it slide back in with relative ease?

I've been sitting here replaying it in my head, and I'm wondering if putting it in neutral and dropping the rear mount to get a better angle would help. Maybe the angle is just slightly off and we're working against too much friction. What do you think?

I'll take some pics tonight when I get home.

Good idea. I'm gonna pick up a portable media blaster today and give that a try. I could use it on some other parts anyway, so win-win :-)

Mine is fairly thick so usually need some lube but spit will do if no lube is available.

It should slide in easily and the angle should be a non issue. There is a pivot joint right there.

You cannot do this.

my shaft was always very easy to slide in and out
Wondered how many posts this would take to devolve into this... and its 9, did'nt even make it to double digits... so sad.

One more question regardling media blasting. Should I use something softer than plastic bead?

No idea on the media blasting, but some high temp grease will make things a bit easier.

Just to follow up on this, I cleaned the splines with a brush and lubed it up with some high temp grease and it slid right in.

I'm pretty embarrased at how simple the "solution" was :-/
