Default Myth...busted!!! VQ35HR in 03-04 Z/G. Gauges work!

We had a customer bring us an 03 G35 coupe with an 08 VQ35HR. Installed in it already. He had been to many shops trying to get it to run. He finally found our youtube post of a VQ35DE running on the ground on stock harness and ECU and asked us if we could figure out how to make it run and get all the gauges to work like stock.
We had to wire up the VQ35HR engine harness to work with the 03 G35 body/dash harnesses, BCM, and IDPM. We fully tuned the ECU and EVERYTHING works 100% including gauges, VDC, electronics, cruise control, and dual drive-by-wire throttle bodies... This was a technical challenge that took us 3 days of wiring.

Here is the engine installed and a good few of the front end of the 03 G.

Call us if you need any help with your project of tuning.

Here is a video of the gauges and the car running while we are tuning it:

So what did you end up charging him? Before noobs start jumping on the HR swap wagon, it'd be nice to see if the wiring alone is more than a TT kit.

This is great news. I will scrap my LS swap plans and just get a new HR motor and boost it of this is a feasable swap cost wise. Good job Z Fever!!!! You guys have been coming with it lately.

THIS.

Regardless, great job on breaking new ground. This would be a HUGE benefit for members looking to go F/I with TT kits assuming all the piping fits with the twin TBs.

Also, the question remains, what did it cost to mount the HR in the older body. Custom mounts? I don't think the HR bolts to the DE trans. Driveshaft?

I figure it has to be an HR ECU. What a PITA and 3 days is very fast work for doing something 1 off like this. Nicely done but too bad he didn't pick up a VHR.

That's not an 03 cluster or clock - lots of changes in this car if it was originally an 03.

Guys, assume std labor rates to get a guesstimate. At least in this case, you're paying for someone smart that works fast.

Thanks for appreciating our work. It was great to have someone call us with this project. We got to get paid for a little R&D... I usually have to pay for this stuff out of my pocket first to see if it could be done.
We have had many people call and ask IF it could be done but because we did not know we could never give a real cost analysis.

It took us 3 full days of wiring research and development. We are running a full VQ35HR swap, including the transmission. The engine bolted into the factory position. Trans mount worked from the HR. So did the driveshaft.

As for the wiring...... We are running the VQ35HR ECU and EFI harness. However...because we already know how to re-wire these harnesses to run in just about anything, we wired it to mate to the VQ35DE dash connector.
Then simply plugged it in.

I installed the VQ35HR in one of my 240SX's just to make sure it all worked. Here is a video of that....

The interior and gauges looks like it was originally a Revup. It has to be an 05-07 then.

Very cool, but you're not mentioning a ball park, so I'm just going to assume it's not a cost effective approach to building a DE.

My guess is 2k-2500 in wiring labor alone

Oooopps....sorry 'bout that guys. We charged him $1500 for the wiring (even though it took us 20 hrs or so) and $595 for the tune. It is a fairly complex job. Now that we have done it, we could reproduce the harness work and tune the ECU here in-house as a mail order service. It would still take us several days to do.

We have the ability to test every harness before it leaves our facility to make sure it works.
Mail-in service would be $1950 for the harness service and ECU tune.

Looks like the original cluster to me (all orange). I thought the revups had some blue lines in them. Either way, given that it is possible to swap the two I doubt it matters which you have when doing a HR swap.
