Default G35 VQ into 350z

Hi,

I have a 2003 350Z track model with a motor that has low compression on cylinders 5 and 6. I want to swap the motor out with another VQ so that I can continue to drive the car while I build the original motor. In looking around, it is a bit hard to find a complete motor out of an '03 - '05 350Z in my area (Denver). However, there seem to be plenty of wrecked G35's at my local Copart yards. I searched around a bit and got some mixed information about what would be involved with swapping in the motor from a G35.

I am currently looking at swapping in a VQ from an '04 G35 so I can avoid the RevUp stuff. Assume these questions are specific to an '04 G35 automatic going into my '03 350Z 6mt. Here are my questions:
  1. Will I need to use the wiring harness from the G35 in my 350Z? I have an Osiris UpRev ECU tune and an Osiris UpRev MAF on my current motor that I would like to use on the motor I swap in. My plan was to leave the bulk of the harness connected on the current motor in my 350Z when I remove it, and then swap it over to the VQ that will be pulled from the '04 G35 while both motors are out of the car.
  2. Would there be anything special that I would need to do to the motor coming from the automatic '04 G35 to put it in my 6mt '03 350Z? I know I will have to remove the torque converter and put my clutch on.
  3. Is this a direct swap, or are there sensors/brackets/mounting points that need to be modified?
  4. Is there anything else I should be aware of that could complicate things for me while doing the swap that I wouldn't encounter if I were to use the motor from an '03 or '04 350Z instead of using a G35 donor?
Thanks in advance!

To be honest, I've never swapped a G VQ35DE into a Z, so I cannot speak from experience. Having said that, I think this swap should come off without a hitch. The harness should switch over and all sensors should be be the same.

Appreciate the feedback neighbor. I've talked to a couple people via IG and old friends from the southeast and they have said that I will need to swap the harness over because the ECU plug is different, but that everything else should work fine.

Also @dkmura is it cool if I send you a PM?

I have a Z engine in my G. It's all the same as long as it's a RWD vehicle.

Thanks. It would be going RWD => RWD. The only thing that may be different is the donor car may be an auto and my car is a 6mt. I think I read somewhere that it will still work, I just need to remove an adapter plate or something like that from the auto engine.

Auto and 6mt have different pilot bearings, make sure you change it out.

I am having problems with my swap. I put my 350z motor into my g35. They are both 03 de non revup. When we started the g35 it had p0300 random is fire code and it pop every 5 sec at idle. I didn’t not swap the wire harness because I was told everything was the same. I would appreciate help.

Did you mix up the #4 and #6 coil harness?

If you look at the harness, the plug that is in the middle goes to #6 and the plug at the back goes to #4. It is @ss backwards. Thanks Nissan!
