Angry Car overheated today??? Any ideas

Ok, i get in my car today and start drivin out of my apartment complex where by the end of the gates I am already warmed up. However, when I finally make it out on the road the car is still at all the way cold, I make it about 100 yards down the road and the needle all the sudden swings past where it normally sits when the car is warm and continues towards hot. I shut the car off and pull over before it overheats all the way. I look around and can't find any hoses that are loose, I then look under the car and see coolant dripping off the crossmember that holds the radiator in place. I add more water and it starts dripping more. Now I am thinking I have a cracked radiator, however I have never hit anything or scraped it, not even my front bumper. Now I am starting to get pissed so I go buy some radiator stop leak, put it in and fill the radiator the 2nd time and let the stop leak do its job. After all this is over I go drive it around and everything is fine and no dripping. Now my question is what could have happend.

have you ever messed around with anything on the radiator before i.e. installed headers, flushed radiator, installed cai, etc.

did you bleed the air out of the lines properly when you installed the thermostat, it is possible that there is an air bubble in your lines that could cause it to overheat.

maybe try draining it completely and refilling it, letting it run in your garage or driveway and looking for leaks.

If it continues I would suggest getting a "leak trace" kit. It consists of a bottle of dye that you add to the coolant and a black light. You simply add the dye to the radiator, start the engine and let it warm up. Once it starts to leak again the dye in the coolant will fluoresce under the black light and you will be able to see exactly where the leak is coming from. It is really pretty slick.

note, you need a "portable" blacklight for that.

and its easier if its not bright out.
