Perhaps I used the wrong technical term - I picked up two "pot-scrubber" pads that are made out of coiled stainless steel shavings - not the steel wool that comes in pads and is hair thin. There are no loose particles with these pads that I can find. But I will be very careful to make sure that there are none before using.
My thought was to use something that air can flow through while attracting the oil particles. But perhaps as the OP said, it is not needed.

Well got this installed and now know where all my oil is going... When I did my last oil a change a couple days ago I was down almost 2 quarts. I installed the oil catch can 2 days ago and its about and 1/8 of the way full already...2 DAYS. I might be making a trip to Nissan

Yeah I just might show up for that, I was at Sierra Vista Autox last weekend.
*edit* This thing catches ALOT of oil in my car, would recommend any and all 350z owners make one of these

ok, went out for the first drive after installing it. worked like a champ, there is a little oil at the bottom, not to much though.
Oddly enough though my car idled better with this installed and had less smoke. I really dont know if that coincides with the install, but it was nice.

The Warning label on the "can" say "EXPLOSION avoid Synthetics oils,...." wold that really a problem if I use it with Synthetics oil? have any one using it with Group III/Group IV Synthetics oils?

* Potential decomposition problems in certain chemical environments
* Potential stress cracking of plastic componentry like POM (polyoxymethylene) in the presence of PAO's."
and that "can" looks like plastic to me.
I'm using base oil with this "can" it works really good for my 06 almost all the oil missing I can found it in this "can" just got to empty it like 400mi.

I just put mine in after noticing lots of oil pooled on top of my lower plenum when puttin in my spacer. Since the plastic "can" might not work with synthetic oils, I will replace my "can" every year or so. I like how its clear so I know when to empty it.
After a little over 100 miles, I have about 1 tablespoon of oil in the can.

The can will NOT explode when used with synthetic oil. Remember, these are made for air compressors. My compressor can run as high as 175 psi. On your car, there is vacuum in the can, not pressure.

I will be making one very shortly here on a 4th axis in a machining center with a cork screw style core that draws vacuum through a tube in the center of the cork screw and then welding it into an aluminum shell. The corks screw will essentially spin the oil out of the air and it will accumulate at the bottom in a reservoir. Should be nice. I will post pics when it is finished.
