Default factory seat mod

Some people complain (me included) that the factory seats, especially the cloth seats, are too narrow in the back/side bolsters.

Has anybody tried removing the seat back skin and shaving the excess foam off of the inside edges of the bolsters and seeing if they can be made a little wider, without having too much excess fabric flopping around after reinstalling the seat skin?

I think if there is a little excess fabric slop left over due to removing the extra bit of foam that it could be taken up in the back of the seat somehow. If the skins fit tight enough and if ya remove 3/8"'s or less from each bolster, maybe it wouldn't even be much of an issue.

I was thinking if about 3/8" could be shaved off of each side, that it might give just enough extra room to make the factory seats a lot more bearable for those of us with wider backs and shoulders. That would give about 3/4"' more overall width and would at least maybe allow me to sink all or most of the way into the back of the seat, like God intended

Eat a little less turkey this year and you'll be fine. ;-) Seriously though I think it would be hard to do. But take pics and let us know how it turns out if you try it!

I happen to love the Z seats but I fit well.

I wonder if it is possible to bend the frame so the bolsters are there but not pinching you in so far. You would still have to take them apart to find out.

I suffer the seat as well. I can't stand driving very far at all with my walet in my pocket as the rail pushes right where my wallet sits butt hard. Having lived in Japan for four and a half years I found most Japanese were skinny @ss people. When I got my survey that was one of the things I *****ed about, that and the quality of the radio.

This is good, looks like someone is brave enough to funk with the seats. So let me highjack this thread a little bit. Is there a way to add a bit of lumbar support on this think. I usually keep the back of the seat at almost a 90 degree angle to the floor of the car (I feel more in control that way). The problem is that my lower back begins to hurt after about an hour...
Also, if you would go with custom upholstery, can you put something between the leather and the foam that would contour to your body, but not raise you too much (I'm 6'2"), just make the seats a bit softer while maintaining the grip? Prolonged driving on stock seats makes my *** ache.

Thank you for a brilliant advise. I am 175 lbs 6'2" slender build, I do not need to lose anything. In fact I may be required to gain some and put some natural padding between me and seat.
