Default do you think rear hatch struts will work for hood?

I recently upgraded my hatch struts with super strong ones. I wondering if any of you diy'ers think I can use my old oem hatch struts for the hood... with the existing old hardware.

My main concern is mounting the ball stud in the sheet metal, I wonder if the stress will bend the sheet metal?

Albert,

The stock hatch struts would be too strong to use on your hood. They are roughly double the force of what you would to need to hold your hood up. With struts that are too strong, you could end up flexing your hood too much attempting to close it. Additionally, they are about 6 inches longer than an ideal damper setup.

BTW, did you get a chance to install the new hatch struts I sent?

I did install them and they are very strong, almost a bit too strong... seems there is so much force when I hit the trunk button it doesn't quite open up without a little help, once it lifts it lifts very strong though.

Thanks for the 411 on the damper info.

Definitely wouldn't do that. You would end up bending the hood over time.

The good news is that the OEM hatch struts are such pieces of crap that in no time at all they will wear out more and not be too strong for the hood.

The bad news is that soon after that they will wear out even more, and will no longer hold the hood up. It will hit you on the head while you are working in the engine bay and kill you.

These should be available very soon. Chrome or Carbon fiber to choose from.

The ones coming out are a new revision will require zero drilling, only a slight notch on the battery covers, and better brackets. Installation should only be about 10 minutes. Tony was testing these a while back the production ones should be available very soon.

My buddy was doing the changes with NRG so he has access to them.

I believe initial GB pricing will be 100 for the chromes, and 125 for the carbon fibers.
