Default Anyone Have Bad Times With Blue Painters Tape?

I am about to go on a long road trip. After some research it seems blue painters tape does a good job of protecting from rock chips. Anyone have any negative side effects from doing this?

Just make sure you wash the car before applying it, and a good coat of wax will help when it comes time to remove it. But yes, the blue tape is very safe for your paint.

If it gets wet it can leave dried adhesive on what you put it on. That's about it though.

When you say dried adhesive what do you mean exactly? Does it come off easily?

The sticky part of the tape will dry up when water dries out of it. It will leave that on what it's stuck to. It's comes off pretty easy, but can leave a bit of discoloration. This is my experience with thier green tape anyway.

if it is a really long trip, try blue painters tape and then race tape over it. race tape is a lot thicker and will actually protect better. the blue stuff is easily torn. pay extra attention to the edges as they will start to come off. rocks will stick it the edges and the wind will make it flap against your paint for undesirable effects.

there was one car at track that had this 'plastic' film wrapped around it. it came in a huge roll like saran wrap and was very easy to apply but looked ugly as sh*t.

It is a 15-16hr drive. I plan to excercise caution while driving as well as using this tape (ie. not driving behind semis or other big trucks). I will use this tape lucratively on my hood and front bumper as well as around my wheel wells. I will take pictures and let everyone know how it went. I will have pictures up sometime early next week.

its funny how i bump and bump a thread with the same question and nobody responds but the second i post something new i get my answers. GG not my fault I have tried bumping it so dont flame me!

edit: if the mods would allow us to change the thread title we could attract new attention to our old threads! just a thought, although, I do realize people would abuse this and use it to do something stupid but that is just life...gives the mods something to do

wash, wax and don't let the sun bake it too long. is the car factory paint or have you painted it? if the front has been painted within the last 4 months, don't do it! you run the risk of the tape inprinting lines, even if the parts were baked. you don't want to wax right after a fresh paint job either, it prevents the clear coat from gassing off like it needs to. i'm sure there's a company that makes clear leading edge tape custom cut to fit a Z?

It is factory paint. I plan to apply just before taking the trip and taking it off the very next day. I leave around 5pm and arrive at my destination around 1pm the next day, half my drive will be at night.

I am more worried about engine heat melting the adhesive from underneath.

the blue tape actually has a less agressive tack and is a fraction the cost of the green 3M tape. of course use the green in the paint shop, it's not affected by the solvents. but in this case, blue would be fine!
