Not sure what the problem is, I have 3 heavy coats on mine. The lights look better than stock even when they are off.

I would just not tint the taillights, I really have never been a fan of tinted tails, looks a little boy racer-ish.

I never liked VHT - I think it looks terrible, and you need a clear top coat to cover the chalky look.
On my other car I used Tamiya paint for plastics - it a paint for models, I found it at a local hobby shop. The color I used was Smoke - it is a much better paint and the color is lighter than nightshades.
To get really dark you would need more coats which I didnt want, but I put on 5 coats and got the right color for my car (the Mazda color is called carbon gray mica, it is a shade or two lighter than black), a little wet sanding with 2000 grit and some polishing compound and my lights looked great.

It makes it very dangerous due to the reduced light output.

I just ended up using some paint thinner and took a little bit of the black off. It was just enough to keep it black out like I wanted it but also enough to make it where you can see the light shine through really good. Thanks guys for your help and opinions.

Blacking out the taillights sounds like a good way to get your rear end modded by some yoyo who's not paying attention.

Let me see, driving a automobile and not paying attention to the road or drivers on the road. Do they just pass out drivers licenses like candy to any moron in Ga????

Think they might see the 3rd light or brake light????

Uhh, the last time I checked the high-mounted light only comes on when the brake is applied. At night or in bad weather, it will be easier to miss the taillights if they're partially hidden by the smokeout.

I'd say it will pretty well wipe out any chance of collecting from the other guy's insurance, since they'll be able to lay the blame on an ill-advised mod as contributing to the accident.

You must be really naive if you think every else on the road is fully alert and paying attention to their driving.

Glad you fixed your issue. I was going to recommend some super white LED bulbs. However, tinting it too much is a real visibility hazard esp when you drive at nighttime and when it's raining. Driving around in my beater i've noticed how hard it is it to see cars with dark tinted tails when they brake.

Beater All The Way.

I've been thinking of smoking out the tails but I might just switch them for different ones to avoid any future rear endings.

pay the extra and get it done right!
done by a paint shop: $150 for both.
light output is the same. yes mine are still a little transparent, but you can go darker and still have perfect output. it jsut needs to be done right.

and my friend's G

(light output is still fine....only a tiny bit recuded.
