Default DOT approved tinted tail/head lights?

Sorry if this has been brought up before, I'm sure it has. I did a few searches and couldn't find much.

In Virginia it is illegal to tint your head or tail lights. My friend who works at shop told me that you can buy DOT approved covers that are not illegal. Or you can get the tint approved? He's not always very reliable when it comes to knowledge, and I couldn't find anything with Google, so I figured I'd ask you guys. Is there any way I could make tinting my head/tail lights legal?

For head lights you can paint the housings. It looks much better than tint and is more functional.

For tail lights just get the lightest tint you can find made for tail lights and see if your local police even notice.

I bought my tint(light smoke) from ebay a long time ago and the Philly cops haven't bothered me.

By housing you mean the inside part, not the actual lense covering?

Yes. There is DIY threads on here and other forums on the head light. It's not fun but well worth the trouble.

The only company that I know of for plastic tinted covers is GTS. Try google for that. They're darker than the smoke tint though. Last and ugliest option is ebay black housing tails available in various levels of disgusting.

You're probably not going to want to tint the headlights, it drastically effects nighttime visibility, atleast at the tint percentage I have on mine.

The DIY for the headlights is a good idea but I'm too much of a puss to put my headlights in the oven

You know what... I'm just gonna leave the exterior alone. Seems like everything is "out of style" now adays.

Don't let anybody discourage you. We all have opinions. I'm perfectly happy with my tinted tails. If I'm the only one, that's ok with me........I make the car payment every month.

Do whatever you want to YOUR car.

/\ This.

I just installed some JDM tails and tinted them as well. I am SUPER happy with them. Mine is an 03 so they had the older style tail lights and I tinted them last year. I liked it but overall had mixed feelings. They seemed a bit too dark. The JDM 06-08 lights, tinted, are lighter since the housing is clear and not red. They look SOO much better so that might be an option as you get the LED style which is brighter to begin with(and IMO just nicer overall) and the clear housing that won't be as dark once tinted.
