Default what would cause this to happen to a hatch?

So a co-worker and I are thinking about trading Z's. I went to look at it today and noticed his hatch was sticking up in BOTH corners and there is a gap between the quarter panel glass and the hatch seal. Both sides are like this and I'm very curious as to what would cause this. There is no apparent damages to anything. Hoping someone has come across this before so you could ease my mind a little. Thanks

This is the only pic he sent me.

Never been in a wreck?

If not, I'd assume the hinges could have been bent if they slammed the hatch with something blocking it up near the hinges. Does it still function like normal? What's they're explanation for the cause?

Jus a thought one time rebuilding my car we put the shocks on either upside down or on the wrong side... It looked exactly like this....

We were tired from working through the night and this **** had us beat...

Jus some food for thought!

functions normally. I didn't even notice till a friend pointed it out. My co worker bought it used from a small dealership like this so unfortunately I can't ask the person this happened to.

Could be very possible the struts went bad that hold the hatch up and had to be replaced and the small dealership put them in upside down. It's a common problem (struts going) but that's just a thought.

Does simply turning the struts around to the correct position fix the misalignment problem? Do you have to replace the hinges or do some other body work, too?

If its the shocks flipped it you should be able to just correct the shock and it will be good. The hinge area does not bend, this is a common problem with the cars that have the heavy duty baby launching hatch struts. The body side strut mount bends, when it is bent the forward corners of the hatch will stick up. A few taps to the lower mounting bracket, and everything lines back up once again.

just take off the hinges and the shocks, and see if the hatch will lay on the body of the car perfectly without gap. If there is still a gap, then the hatch isnt the correct size for whatever reason.
