Default Are any of these "CF" Hoods light?

Hey guys, I really have little interest in replacing my hood but I was just looking to sate my own curiosity. All of these carbon fiber hoods I am seeing, I imagine they are fiberglass with carbon fiber overlays correct? Hence I would think they are rather heavy in comparison to our stock aluminum hood. Just curious if anyone had numbers on any hoods. I haven't weighed ours but I am fairly certain it is pretty light.

they are asthetic parts.

they arent ALOT heavier, 2-3lbs, but obviously not worthwhile to lose weight with.

true cf couldnt do much though. the stock hood isnt real heavy to begin with. better places to loose weight, starting with the doors and hatch.

That was another question I had. Is anyone producing a lightened rear hatch.. with Lexen glass or something like that? Rear hatch must weigh close to 60-70 pounds I would think

qood question, and no doubt your right.

the gas struts are lifing alot of that weight and the hatch is still super heavy.

problem with laxan is no rear defroster if that matters to you. and Im sure other drawbacks I dont know about. thatd be a big part of the weight in there though Im sure. more glass than metal really, and glass is heavier I think.

Yes someone is. No lexan from what I can tell, but their ad in Option ( says it reduces weight from 22 kg to 9 kg.

(Just got back from Japan yesterday. Skylines and S15 Silvia's are awesome! Then again, so is the Fairlady.)

Here's the webpage with it as well. I don't know how to post anything, so you'll probably have to cut and paste. http://www.varis.co.jp/e%2Cz33a1.html

What 22 kg? That's 48 lbs... That thing (hutch) must've weight much more than that. Here is something I wanted to have.

Of course it can be painted to match the color, and louvers are optional. Glass or lexan are options too. Even if it's glass, you'll notice that on both projects it's 2 to 3 times smaller piece of glass than stock.

I find it stupid that so many companies produce cf hood which replaces already extra light hood. And than nobody produces a hutch wich can really save you 20 to 40 lbs.

Yeah, there's no way that even just the glass weighs 20 lbs. My guess is that they replace the skin and most of the metal.

well the glas I would assume is a seperate part, they are taking the part they replace and saying it weighs 48lbs, ignoring what is probably another 40lbs in glas.

so you save about 30lbs before touching the glas, which is probably good for another 30lbs. not bad. but 2grand for the carbonfiber. and who knows how much for a custom contoured peice of lexan like that.

I bet a normal sheet of lexan would work pending the attachment method. Of course, you're forgetting shipping from Japan on a very awkward, fragile, and expensive piece. (Just doesn't seem worth it for 3k and all the compromises.)

With lexan, the wiper would only be scratching it, so you could lose that. And the struts would be way overpowered, so lose them too.

Anyway, I think this was supposed to be a hood post. The stock hood weighs 24 pounds. The lightest hood I've ever seen for it is 15 pounds. You can lose 9 pounds a lot easier from the driver going on a diet.

Or you can always lose your stereo...

That hatch would be hard to see from the back, hard enough as it is since it's low.

If you talking about pantera style, than it'll give you about the same view to the rear. Take current glass angeled at 30deg, do a vertical down, substract the part that strut bar is currently obscuring anyway and you'll get exactly the same piece of vertical glass as on that picture.

As for loosing stereo... I'm thinking about removing my rear speakers. I don't use them anyway (fade full forward), since I like to have only one left and one right speaker.

Any idea how much those crapy rear speakers weight?

If you're talking about the Clarion pieces of ****, the paper weighs nothing and the magnets are maybe 1/2 a pound. You won't pick up much by removing them except breaking some plastic clips. If you're talking about the Xplods, too much. I think I gave myself a hernia putting that back there.

the case itself has to be good for 20lbs on those subs.

that would be the place to start, pick a direction up or down, dont spend double so you can add weight in one place and remove it in another.
