What is the part# or type of 3M double sided tape you all have used for a spoiler install. I want some stuff that thin, and super adhesive!

 

Scotch (by 3m) outside use, heavy duty, double sided tape is what i plan on using on my emblems

not sure if it'll work on wings as well... but i'm looking to do an install soon too and i'll let you know how it goes

 

3M #4229-P, red release liner, w/white 3M logo silkscreened on it. 1/32 inch thick, exterior rated. DO NOT use industrial tape as it has no weathering capabilities. Check a body shop supply place. It's used by the automakers and body shops. Nothing comes close.

How about a single sided 3M tape one side sticks and other side just work as a pad?

 

Well, as I found out... none of my local body shops carry that tape (or have even heard of that model #) ... and no place I search online has any information about it, besides the 3M website.

Do you know of an online retailer for this, or could you even SELL me a roll?

if local area body shop supply places don't have it and claim to not have heard of it before they are in the wrong business or don't care about their business. Try the yellow pages to find a 3M distributor. There should be some in your area. I would sell you some but it comes to us on 4 foot wide rolls and I have no way to cut it off and preserve it for shipping.
I just did a search at 3M. They have alot of newer tapes designed for your purpose. There are many tapes that perform as well as the 4229 which has been around for over a decade. I only recommended it because everyone in our industry uses it on 4 foot rolls. The VH2 high bond system is available on other foam substrates and will work as well as what we are using here. I did end up finding the 3M06383 and 3M06384 ... they were easily attained at the body shop supply places around here. I just never found anything that was as THIN as the 4229-P (.030)

I guess I am just paranoid about the wing falling off, or something like that. I would rather avoid drilling holes in the hatch, until I know I am sticking (no pun intended ) with the spoiler.

i have a place...i bought the perfect stuff...its called 3m acrylic foam or something like that...i posted a thread about it a while ago saying that i had extra..but i forgot where i bought it...ill check

great info, thanx for posting this! so you can apply these large wings with just an all weather tape/adhesive? so i dont need to drill my hatch to add a wing like the nismo or one of its size?

How can you tell if it is exterior rated? I have a lip and spoiler that I would like to mount using tape in addition to mechanical fasteners but I am not sure which tape to get. The lip is my main concern since it very closely follows the contours of the front bumper but it is not 100% exact. The lip easily flexes to meet the bumper so I thought that the tape would be the best bet to keep the two in contact. TIA

 

i went to a body shop supply store today and asked for the 3m 4229p tape recommended above... when I got there though, the guy showed me another brand of tape called "pro form PF950"

apparently it's used almost exclusively by ford for door moldings, emblems and OEM skirts/wings and it's also half the price... so I decided to go with that instead of the 3m

I'll let you know how it goes... I will be installing in a few days

oh btw - the guy I talked to (who supplies the ford, honda and mazda dealerships in my neighborhood) said that the adheasive promotor was NOT required... esp. if we're not professional installers - the reason being you can use TOO much promotor and end up making the bond between the tape and car even weaker

 

so does anybody know if wings such as the nismo or others of similar size can be mounted with these tapes being mentioned? i wouldnt want to install a wing & have it fly off!

Chances are tape is all you will need. BUT it depends on how good the two surfaces meet. That is why a thicker tape is good. You cannot tell that easily whether the guy has 1/32" or 1/16" tape holding the spoiler on. The 1/16th will fill voids better. Just make sure it is exterior rated. If you aren't sure then ask the supplier. It should say Rated for Automotive Exterior use. The lesser foams do not hold up and do not age well even in the absence of UV. I have some old white foam tape here that is useless falling apart, and maybe only 8 years old. Stick to what 3M says and you cannot go wrong.
Adhesion promoter is used to bond to difficult plastics. They sometimes have plastisizers that migrate into the acrylic adhesive and weaken the bond. 3M started offering it because the dash kit companies had trouble sticking dash kits to the plastic interiors. It is not needed on exterior surfaces like you paint or the paint on the spoiler. Make sure though all wax is off first!
