Attitude towards re-hashing old topics
Okay, full disclosure -- I'm a new member here. I keep seeing replies to posts to the effect of "welcome to the forum. next time before u make a new thread, please use the search function. the [xyz] topic has been debated to death already." Quite frankly, I don't get this attitude, and I say this as someone who has run my own message boards in the past.
You see, here's the thing. Any time you have a subject-specific site, be it a 350Z site, or a site about knitting Xmas stockings, there's only so much that can be discussed. Think about it, unless you're at a website about, say, theoretical physics, where it's expected that there will always be some completely brand new idea that nobody has come up with before, sooner or later you're going run out of completely original things to discuss. In other words, the range of possible topics is finite.
So why do you guys freak out when someone brings up something that has been discussed before? If I start a thread about wheels, that's been discussed before. If I ask about cold air intakes, sorry, we've been over that. The paint on the Z's front end is prone to chipping, any suggestions? Hey, try doing a search, you clown, it's been covered.
If you guys are going to jump down people's throats every time they bring up something that's already been discussed -- which applies to pretty much EVERYTHING given that the scope of this website is finite -- then you might as well close it off to any and all new posts and just make this a searchable archive only.
That's my 2 cents as a newcomer. I signed up to this site eager to share thoughts and ideas. Instead, I find myself terrified to say anything. I just traded in my '02 S2000 for a 350Z 30 days ago, and thought maybe I'd share my thoughts on how the two compare. I did drive the S2000 for 4 years and had it pretty well modded out, after all. But I get the impression that I'll get flamed if I bring this up. Because heaven forbid, it's been discussed before!

you got it all wrong. You can give your opinion/review on anything you want. We love to hear more and more comparisions btw the z and other cars especially since youve driven both.
What gets old is cold air intake question, best exhaust questions, popcharger this/that, window issue, tranny issue, TURBONATOR!!!!!, and crap like that. When people post a one line question about the turbonator its obvious they havent searched at all. Or supercharger vs turbocharger, 300whp na. Best turbo, best supercharger...........rice tailights, must i go on? Or the, what cars can i beat stock for stock! i hate those.
Try to be original with your thread making. Theres still a ton of uncovered stuff. The nitrous forum still needs more input as there are only a few experts and a ton of newbies (myself).
I hope that helped........welcome to the site

Welcome to the board, and to your Z....
There is a simple explanation to why, and since you ran your own board.. you would think you'd know.... quality, and reuseability of information. Everytime you create a new thread on a topic that has been discussed before.. it makes it more difficult for someone to search for the answer, because now instead of 1 thread.. there are 10.
#1 Message board rule of all time:
"It is better to post in an existing thread, than to start a new one."

I agree, this is one of the rudest forums. Everytime someone asks a question they have to swear they have done a search and studied the topic before typing a question. What's the point of a forum if you can't discus some topics? if I just purchased a 350z and looking to mod it I want to talk about intakes and put in my 2cents, not read what everyone else says. IMO if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything and instead of telling someone to search, send them the link to a previous thread to help them out. there have been times I wanted to ask a question or make a statement but I don't bc I don't want ppl to "flame" me. This is a car forum, I don't know why some people take it so serious. Without everyones questions the forum would die until some new parts or technology comes out to talk about. There's only so many things to talk about when it comes to cars or any topics, I think its dumb to be rude to people that repeat a question or don't have the same knowledge of you

This is what I'm talking about.
I have no problem what so ever with people making retarded posts. If i see a topic about something that doesn't concern me, i can't answer it, i'm too busy for, or i just plain don't care to open it, I stay away or leave it alone. I HATE when people waste there time with "search newb" or make lame comments like they're moderators because they have 345 posts and have been members since Jun 2005. Let mods be mods and clean things up a bit. They don't need our help in telling someone, "Hey, take a look at the rules of the boards and enjoy your stay".
IMO, post your post and ask your questions. Your best bet, if you can't handle being flamed for (God forbid) an already covered topic, PM someone. Most people on boards such as this will actualy feel honored that a "Newb" is asking them "Will my car run better with a tomato in my tail pipe, or a grape fruit in my intake?"
So good luck to you Semtex, have a great day. Now get out there and start posting!

Really I think that it just depends on the time of month (if you know what I mean)
that determines wether or not someone is going to get flammed on here. I only say that because I have seen people ask questions and they just get hammered for asking it since it has been asked before. Then a week later someone will ask the same question and everyone is nice and answeres the questiong no problem WTF
lol. I do have to agree though with what was said above with some of the same old questions like which is better s200 or Z, and which exhaust is best and stuff like that. But you know this is a disscusion board we come on here to chat meet new people and stuff so personally I think we can all be a little bit nicer to the new b's. And when it comes to the search engine, it can be kind of hard to look up specific information. I once spent 45 minutes looking for a specific thread about wheels and couldnt find it so I asked one of themembers and they found it in a minute so I cant totally blame people for just asking instead of searching.

Welcome, and post what you will. The search function is very limited, plus new products/experience/new thoughts come up all the time. What was true for FI for example, (facts and experiences) has changed so much in the last two years is unbelievable. Just ask your questions, blank out the naysayers.

those type of threads are old. You made it sound like you were going to give a review/comparison of the 350z vs s2k. Asking which is better has been done before and is a subjective question. Im sure theres a ton of threads on that topic.
I could give a review of the two in my own thread and it wouldnt get flamed because its a review/opinion type of thing. If i were to start a thread about which is better id be prepared to get flamed.
same deal with 350z vs rx8.....its been discussed before. Now if you read through the old threads and come up with a new question/point the post it.
Im sure if the mods pulled my search log, theyed see i use it alot before i post a new thread. Its not hard and youll learn alot from it. Theres a top 100 thread you should read and you should look at the forum structure. Searching in the right part of the forum will give you better results.
for fun, go search for turbonator.

This thread in itself explains the attitude. You could have searched and found 30 people who posted the same thing you did and you could have seen the responses you are getting from both sides. Heck, you didn't even need to search. I bet if you read pages 1-4 of this very forum, you will see one of these questions on each page. Instead, you took another thread-line and pushed something useful off the first page of the board (where most people read on a daily basis).
That said, I'm all for the "static, searchable archive... aka. Library!" theory for this site. There is tons of information to any and all (or at least 99.99%) questions you can possibly ask...
I make a movement that all new threads must be submitted to mods for approval prior to posting. Kind of a "Segregation of Duties" type deal. You think you have a new thread, submit to mods, mods approve and post. OR mods point out its been posted 34.7 times before and you should "SEARCH Please before wasting even more of our bandwidth."
I think the board would be 100x better off if this were its operation.
If you want to chat, go to a chatroom; this is a "library" of knowledge as you like to call it...

topic: 350z vs s2k
body: which is better and why?
topic 2 350z vs s2k review
body: ive driven both, heres my review. 250 words later describing the handeling, style, perks, downs and creture comforts of each and you have a good review. The a conclusion with which you think is a better car for either the money, the driving, or whatever.
body end with: discuss..........
two different threads. one will get flamed the other will get some discussion.
To the OP, a 1.5 minute search turned up MANY (several page long) threads regarding this, "Search" Attitude, you discuss.
I.E. - You exemplify why it exists. A simple search by you would have yielded many results where you could have posted your .02 and gotten feedback. Instead you wasted yet more space by creating a new thread.
Here are a few you could have used:

I agree with mdracer76 and Silkk, as I read down this thread, I thought, I have seen all this before. I have also posted my opinion on this quite a few times.
Coincidently, had this been in off topic, I never would have seen it
In short, duplicate threads hurt the informational value of the community as a whole. People who have been around a while, that have answered the same question three or four times start ignoring duplicate threads as some have suggested. Then, threads start getting answered by other relative noobs that for the most part don't know what they are talking about. Next thing you know, some well meaning sap does a search and turns up this garbage and then goes on repeating it over and over.
Another thing you loose by not posting in a previous thread is the subscriptions of all those who have already contributed to the discussion, who are probably more then happy to come back and expound on something for clarification.
There are exceptions, I think it is ok to open a duplicate when a thread gets so polluted with off topic nonsense that renders it useless, or when something like a product/event goes from an R&D/planning phase to a for ready for sale/hard detailed event plan.
