My ping to this site-------------1284!
Pulled up 3d traceroute and got some rediculous pings to this site. I have a decent cable connection that usually tests at around 1.7 m/bits, so that isn't the problem. Other sites come up instantly. Because of this, I've actually stopped hanging out here on a daily basis. I don't post much because I get a "page cannot be displayed" message half the time when I try. My question is, what can I do about it? I've heard that there is actually a way you can do something about a bottleneck between you and a site, but I dunno what. What do you guys think?
thanks,
Tony

It really HAS been HORRIBLE the last 4-5 days but today is the worst I have ever seen it. Each page (even ones without oics) takes over 60 sec. to load!!!
Any fixes for this Mike W.???
At this rate it would take 4 hours just to surf today's posts. I have just been marking all as read and giving up!

This site is by far the slowest message board I've ever visited. I would imagine that eliminating little "features" such as how many new threads have been created since you last visited and little things like the icon notifications on the left side of the table would help speed up the site.
Yes it is pretty horrible much of the time.
Its not the board moderators fault, of course, so no blame needs to be assigned. I believe it's probably just getting pounded too hard.
It would be nice to find out if it's the server or the connection. Weird things happen like it being really responsive for a few seconds in between slow times, which appear to me maybe either: not enough RAM and there's too much swapping going on, or the line is bandwidth throttled and every now and then it is allowed to go full speed.

Incidentally, both 2cpu ( http://forums.2cpu.com - dual processor enthusiest site) and The Ranger's Glade (EverQuest class site: http://forums.interealms.com/ranger/ ) use this same BBS software and have huge amounts of traffic. Both sites are almost always very responsive, so I know the potential exists. Just need to find the bottlenecks.

Well what I was trying to say, but I'll elaborate more on, is that the response seems to be all or nothing. It can be insanely unresponsive, then all of a sudden normal for a bit, then totally non-responsive again.
This is why I think it's one of those two things. If the server is on the verge of using all its memory, it will be normally responsive while under the threshold, but once it starts swapping response will go in the toilet, until memory demand is lowered below the threshold again. Kinda like what I see with this site.
Or the site might be bandwidth-throttled by the upstream provider, with an unsophisticated bandwidth limiter, where it throttles back a little too much, realizes the sight is no longer exceeding bandwidth, lets it runs full speed, where it starts exceeding bandwidth again, throttles back too much, etc.
I think the former is more likely than the latter, since the swapping thing would be a more severe hit than the bandwidth thing, and the behavior I see is severe.
Do we need to take up a collection to buy more RAM for the server? :-)

I got a 256 meg DDR chip I can donate - Where do I send it to
I enjoy this forum thoroughly.
I find valuable information and appreciate the personalities that have collected here.
Sadly, the website is VERY slow. Far slower than is tolerable at times. What can we do to fix this issue?
What is the primary cause?
This site has a HUGE member base. Lets get the ball rolling on creating a remedy.
What do we need to do as a team to overcome?
Fall-Line

I don't know, but 20 sponsors at a minimum 150/month each - $3k a month is a lot of money - I have been assured by the " management" that server upgrades are on the way, but I can't get any kind of upgrade plan or specifics - hell i can't even get an invoice/receipt for our sponsorship! The site has just gotten slower and slower since they started accepting money for ad space - it was completely unusable last night for me. If I can ever get ahold of the owner I will do my best to get this resolved, but he doesn't like to respond to emails/pms/inquiries.
I guess we live with it or move on

Im just a lurker...
But I would certainly be concerned if I were a sponsor!
Other options are quickly becoming more frequented, and that is a shame...because this community is full of good people and personalities.
Who is ultimately responsible for this site? Why does it seem so difficult to get answers?
/shrug

It is being worked on...slowly though. For better or worse, the owner of my350z.com, Takao, is essentially non-existent here. He pops in from time to time, but for the most part he is consumed by the many projects and businesses he is involved with. Most of the time this arrangement works out fine, as the site hums along pretty well under the supervision of Mike/Victor and the mods, as well as the continuing contributions and ideas from our members. But when technical problems like this spring up, the downside to this arrangement becomes apparant. Takao is a very hard person to get a hold of...as in it can take days or weeks to hear back from him. This break in the chain of communication is very problematic when it becomes necessary to get in touch with the right people to arrange for service and updates.
Rest assured though, we hate it as much (or more!) than you do, and it will not go on forever. The culprits for the slowness are being identified, and action will soon be taken to rectify the problems. Just bear with us a little longer, Victor will have us back up to speed shortly.
