I suppose the ease of use in PHP does attract a lot of novice developers, but if you know what you're doing, there should be no question that PHP is just as powerful as any other web development language.

PHP is a suitable scripting language; Python is better, in my opinion. Ease of use, rapidity, and succinctness are important features of a scripting language.
The requirements for a scripting language are much different than those for an architecture language. Solid typing, a good object model, scalable and efficient run times, and excellently written foundation of API and infrastructure software are all necessary. PHP has...none of those. Go ahead and ask Yahoo - they certainly aren't using PHP for their heavy lifting.
