Default It has begun (for me?)

To all you built motor peeps (aka Sharif and Gurgen, haha)

Was it worth the hassle and down time for the build? I'll probably be running 9.5:1 piston heads and no re-sleeving, just the bare bones engine build. Howard at TechnoSquare said he'd build it for me, and i trust him with my engine..

just wanted to know if you regretted anything during the process and suggest changing anything else while the engine was open.

thanks!

Welcome! Glad to see you taking the plunge into built-motor status.

For the PE specific recommendations, Gurgen is the best person to speak to, since he knows that kit more intimately than most.

In regards to the engine buildup, your basic build-up should include the following. I imagine you have addressed most of this already, but let me know if I can help.

piston
Rods
head and main studs
larger injectors of some kind
Complete Return Fuel system
Clutch (not sure which one you currently run..but the ATS twins are incredible)
Crawford plenum

Can you give us a better idea of your power goals, and what you intend to do in terms of tuning, engine management, etc.?

I have heard great things about Howard....I am sure he will do a fine job.

Don't forget to use a trq plate when boring/honing your cylinder walls.

With respect to your question.....it was worth every penny....and worth the hassle.

You really should consider mild Cams such as JWT S1s, they provide really nice gains from mid band up with TTs.

I thought I read somewhere that the stock heads are good for almost 600whp if you change cams (No port and polishing or valve upgrades really needed). True?

520-530 whp seems to be the choke point with stock heads/cams.

With good gas (not 91) , with TTs and mild cams , no head work ,600rwhp seems obtainable. For example , Sharif has been pretty darn close without CAMs . The Cams would push him over the ~600mark, sans head work. Now long term reliabilty at that level without deck closure etc. is another whole can of worms.

Cheston, where have you been? Glad to see you taking the dive. It is also worth changing the thermostat while you are in there. Nismo has one that is not too bad.

Yes. i've been MIA from the forums for far too long.. u can thank a combination of SmartFilter at work @#$@ and a horrendous work schedule-
I wont been living in the desert too much longer, i got me a job back in civilization, so alas i can make use of near-sea level power. (i was at 2900 feet MSL).

Whats so good about the S1 cams from JWT? is it just a milder cut, than say the Tomei ones?

My main goals is to have a reliable 550rwhp+ engine with plenty of torque. I've been reading here and there about everyone's builds and i'm trying to *catch up* heh.
Engine management will probably still be whatever Tadashi can squeeze out of the stock ECU... i'm not a big fan of piggy backs. call me stubborn, but they just tuned Tarzan's TT'd G35C drift car with a crazy engine build and turbo setup with the ecu... so thats something i had in mind.. i really dont want to have enormous hp #s cuz that will just make it non-driveable and i think my PE turbos will only handle so much... i'll prolly go with either a 510cc or similar injectors......

TIM! whuts up dude. lonnng time no talk to- hows everything? did Michael sell his Z?

The mid (not the 268) Tomei is very reasonable. It's just the JWTs can be had for less $ , provide a smooth idle and have shown ~40whp gains in several TT applications. You may get a little more outta the Tomeis , but idle will suffer in kind. IMO.

Just pickup some cams with a little more lift and no overlap.

Ask Tadashi about the limits of the stock ECU with boost. The last time I spoke with him, he mentioned that 12psi was the limit on the stock ECU. Without some kind of pressure reference, you will really be tuning blindly, even if its with a turbo reflash. Do they have some method of rescaling the MAF voltage? If so, that would be a good solution. Another option is to relocate the MAF sensor so it is mounted to the turbo inlet, rather than the charge pipe to the TB. This would effectively double the resolution of the MAF signal. Just a few other ideas for ya.

It has been awhile. How has the car been running? Yeah, Michael sold his Z almost 9 months ago. Man... time flies. Mine has been down for almost 6 months for the build. I decided to do something a little out of the ordinary (inspired by Michael) and it has cost me 3 months. PM me and we can catch up. I do not want to hijack your thread.

BTW, I love the JWT cams. Mild enough to not throw the idle off too far, but aggressive enough for big middle to high end gains. They are a good choice.
