Default Vortech owners any need for an oil catcher?

Recently found the source of oil spraying around the area below the blower and on the aux fuel pump.. The air breather hose was disconnected..Reconnected it and all is fine. However, now I am wondering what effect the oil which is getting into the intake will have.. Has anyone noticed oil in the intake or is a oil catch can the solution?? TIA

I just let my hose dangle and run a different air filter . I have never gotten any oil out of the hose . But if you do get oil out of it , I would install a oil catch can

I have a GReggy catch can on my Procharger. It catches a little oil. I've had it on there for 6 months and the oil isn't even up to the site window. Can't be to much in there.

Me and Neff both installed the Greddy one. For $100 bucks...it was a little insurance and some peace of mind. If you search, Neffster asked the same question and Shariff had some insight on this.

The catch can seems like a good idea.

Also, make sure your oil return drain line is not kinked.....

There should not be a lot of oil hitting the filter.

Yeah, the oil return is fine. Wondering if any other Vortech cars have experienced this oil spray from the breather hose.. Of course it would have to be off and dangling.. Booger said he lets his dangle..

All I know is that the hose leading into my catch can is clean inside and out after 4500+ miles of driving.

If I had it to do all over with (knowing then what I know now) I wouldn't have purchased it. I'll double check it in the next few days and post back just to make double sure.

The exiting catch can hose I assume goes into the air filter. I think the oil if any would be in vapor form and condense inside the can. Can you visually see inside it?

The hoses going into and out of the catch can are clear. I can hold my finger behind the hose and see my finger through the hose. If there was oil in either of the hoses I should be able to see it. I'm guessing that if there is no oil in the inlet hose, there is no oil in the can. The can also has a clear tube/hose that runs vertically along the body of the can. As oil would fill up the can the oil level should be visible.

Again, I'll double check the inlet and outlet hoses along with the indicator level on the catch can later on and post back.

There is a site tube for inspection. Oil consumption on stock motors should not be too bad, and typically a little bit higher oil consumption on built motors. The Greddy catch can has been pretty popular with the Z/G guys...and yes...they are very effective.

Some more detail is located here: http://www.forgedinternals.com/store...cat=264&page=1
I have 3 in stock.

Sharif,, the back of the Vortech filter has a port for a hose. I believe it's called breather hose it comes from passenger side and snakes around to the drivers side. Do you know if this hose come off the PCV? If so it would explain where the oil had been coming from and I assume the catch can's are used to collect any oil vapors from the crankcase..Thanks

I am not sure which breather hose you are refering too. IIRC, the Vortech leaves the stock PCV on the passenger side valve cover alone (someone correct me if I am wrong).

Regardless, the catch can should be installed, as to intercept the breather hose coming off the drivers's side rear valve cover area. Once intercepted, you can reroute back to the intake (smog legal), or dump it to the atmosphere.

When I was installing my new fuel system, I was able to see inside the lower plenum. I saw a lot of oil residue from blowby. I think a catch can would be necessary for any F/I.
Here some pics:

These show oil residue in 2 of the middle cylinder intakes.

A closer look at the inside of the intake.

These are the lower plenum.

Sharif,
In my Procharger setup, I ran the PCV hose to one side of the Greddy can and the breather vent from the driver's side to the other. I then installed a 90 degree barb fitting in the upper site gauge hole. I then hooked up a hose from there to vent to the atmosphere. I used a plug in the bottom site gauge hole. I then drilled and tapped holes for a site gauge on the side of the can. I still have oil coming out of the vent tube, however, the site gauge is clear. My question is, do you think a 3/16 line is adequate to vent the crankcase pressure? I am thinking I should just connect the PCV and breather hoses to a 1/2" tee and then feed the thrid line from the tee to the catch can, and then vent from the other large hose. Any ideas?

Quite honestly I've seen a great deal worse than those pics - look quite OK to me. Could be me though?

This was only after about 1000 miles. In the bottom pic, which is upside down, the oil is actually running down the inside of the intake runner. I think for the relatively inexpensive cost of the catch can, it is good insurance. I have read somewhere that any oil in the combustion chamber is lowers the octane rating of the fuel mixture. It also helps collect particles, which can cause hot spots for detonation.

Hey BadMonkey...the easier way is the method I decribed, and you can use the larger hosing as well. The PCV on the passenger side is a one way check valve, so under boost, nothing is going to come out of that hose, meaning it doesnt need ot be connected to the catch can. If blow by at cruise is a concern, then by all means, you can hook that up to.
