Default Tomei 268 cams on FI car, who is using them?

Just wondering who out there is using the Tomei 268 cams, and how do you like them? Big power increase at 15psi?, How does it idle? etc. Looking for input on diffrent cams as I am undecided what I should go with. Thanks!

Default Tomei 268 Cams

I've had them for a couple years now (N/A) but went with a Greddy TT recently. Idle wasn't a problem as long as you had the idle @ around 900 rpms. When I went TT I also switched from the eManage to the HKS FCON so you might want to talk to a tuner on the tuning setup at idle. (SGP tuned mine) My low boost setting is at 17 psi and both rwhp & torque are in the mid 700's. I'm partial of course, but the lope of the cams @ idle (new exhaust last week) is impressive.

Its a great cam, and definately on the aggresive side. Most engines wont idle without an ECU idle bump to 900-1000rpm, as Mike just mentioned. Otherwise, I like them for the 600whp+ crowd.

Trying to get a cam comparison going is nearly impossible. There are just way to many variables. The only thing people can compare are the idle quality, and possibly part throttle response.

Would it benefit a high 500's low 600s whp car? I guess it will leave room for future power upgrades with out needing to replace cams again. I am just trying to do it once and do it right. I also like the aggresive cam sounds at idle with the idle jumping alot. Thanks for the input guys.

Yes it will, I am just throwing up my ballpark thoughts on it. Higher duration cams will push the power curve to the right, so you will trade a little more bottom end trq/power, for more trq/power up top. You will also want to upgrade your valvetrain, to take advantage of an 7500-8000rpm redline, in order to maximize the benifits that higher duration cams will give you.

I am going to be upgrading the Valvetrain, Just undecided on what cams to go with, will be revving the motor to 8K, So these cams would def. Benefit me in the 4-8k RPM range. ( even thought i dont want to take it to 8K to much, just 7.5K or so )

I have the 268's on the stock ECU and they idle fine, around 7-800rpms, if i keep the heater on. I have full Ferrea valve-train as well. When i'm driving if i put it in neutral from 3000rpms and above it will fall all the way down and die half of the time. So i just have to keep it in gear when coming to a stop all the way down to 8-1000rpms so it doesn't die.

That's what the Nismo VTC pulleys are supposed to help, however without the ability to control VTC timing, it doesn't help.

Someone needs to figure out a solution to the VTC pulleys.

But what cam grind would work better with our current RPM range? Just a question for those who don't want to necessarily rev that high...

So it's not idling just fine. We usually bump up the idles to 1000rpm, so the idle is rock solid, and the engine never dies.

Hey Derek, any updates on the car? You should start another thread...I am sure many people would like to know your progress.
