This is very interesting news..I would like to see some more testing and some long term effects of this mod, before everyone jumps all over it as a cure for head lift.
IMHO the headlift issue was from people running WAAAAAY to much timing advance on their cars. Im curious to know everyone who ever experienced HEADLIFT , what their Timing curve looked like.
Not to rain on anyones Parade but we were running 18.5 psi on stock heads and cams..We never displayed any signs of head lift..I think the cause and solution of head lift is a little different than we all have been lead to believe.
I wish you luck and respect and salute you for your efforts and experiments.

SGP pulled an extra 4 degrees of timing from what they usually tune to because of how agressive I drive and I am seeing headlift or signs of headlift.

I can't look at my logs cause I have an FCON, but when Mark was tuning my car he told me he was taking out an extra 4 degrees from what he usually sets it to.

Tim,

Do you know how much timing you are running?

ok.

I am hoping Tim chimes in. He has almost the same set up as me and was also tuned by SGP.

Hopefully..Our experiences tunning the VQ have shown that the car will react to a plus or minus of 1 degree of timing if it needs it, otherwise if the addition of an additional degree does not make power, we dont leave that degree in.It makes no difference so we leave it out.We tune all our cars with a very flat timing curve. I think alot of people make the mistake of adding to much timing. What they see is the car not knocking, so they keep adding timing, but its not making any additional signifigant power. All it really is doing is increasing Cylinder temps and pressure, making the car run closer to detonation. This is my personal opinion of what is causing head lift. To much unneeded timing.

i agree also that some very light detonation could be adding to the effects of why people are leaking combustion. but considering there was and is so many people in this situation, once they leak a little combustion, they will loose the sealing material on the head gasket in that area, thus making the problem get progressively worse. even if someone was in perfect tune, a bad tank of gas could make them create the cylinder pressures needed for this to happen.
this will be a very good preventative mod for people who are not even losing coolant now, as it will help prevent the heads from lifting for the first time and blowing out the sealing material on the head gasket.

btw- thanks for the praise, i am hoping after more time this will become a standard on all future motor builds. for the price of everything else invovled, this could be the cheapest most effective part of the build.

would installing this mod interfere with any more modifications down the road? for example if I later decide to pull my motor and add sleeves, valve train, 1/2 head studs, and 100mm pistons?

what about those of us that have already started losing coolant? will we eventually have to replace the hg even after installing your mod? i am not leaking as bad as you were and I only leaked when I would set boost to 16psi. I have since refilled my cooling system and stayed at 10psi and I am not having any problems.

this would not hinder any other part of the build. heck, you don't really even ever have to pull them out again.

in the tests so far on my car, it has basically stopped all the leaking. i know, it is surprising me also! yup, just went out and looked at my overflow again, hasn't budged in 4 days now, and i have been hammering on it. normally i would have had to fill the motor 2-3 times at the pace i have been driving it.

What turbos are you guys using? and what CR?

You are running 15 degrees from peak tq on with 18.5psi of boost?

On the other hand, how many degrees did you guys achieve on peak tq? 11~12 or so.

Thanks,

Az

Hurry up with my order Scott! I haven't driven my car very much the last few weeks. I've been driving a new daily driver and my wife's Lexus. Man a DD is the best mod an FI owner can get. When I use to drive my G everyday I lost respect for 500+whp and was always thinking about how to get more out of it. Now when I drive the G I chit my pants every time I step on it. I can't wait to get your mod installed so I can use my 16psi setting again.
