Even if it did the TN flash was a back up, it detonated back in the winter time at 10psi, in 90 degree heat and only 9psi Im sure it wouldnt have been ideal but I doubt it would have blown, especially so low in the rev range even if the UTEC wasnt working. FWIW-the TN base map and my mods detonated over 5500rpm's never below and especially never around 3800-4000rpm

Dang that's rough. It's another wake up call for me to live by the golden rule: You can't afford an FI kit unless you can afford to replace the motor!

Looks like I will need to save up an extra 8 grand or so.

I feel your pain, found out my rings are bad last Thursday.... did you have any warning signs? I've had an oil leak which lead to the compression test (failed).
the bottom line is that sooner or later this WILL happen on the stock block.

Friday night on the way to a Z meet of all places my motor let go. Went WOT in 2nd around 3000rpm's at almost 4000rpm's I heard/felt what sounded like nasty detonation so I let off. Heard the most horrible noises and felt like something hit the firewall. Engine died, pull over 300ft oil streak behind me. I knew it immediately. My GF was scared and didnt know WTF had just happned she still swears my dash moved from something hitting it

I did everything right, had a GREAT conservative tune, timing was good, A/F's good, return fuel system, HKS ignition, and still it blew. Car sat on the side of the road pouring out oil from the undertray as I waited for a tow truck. First one shows up says "nope, no way Im towing that". Guy measured my stock front lip 3.5" off the road, was nice enough to call me a truck he knew could tow my car without scraping BAD.

Pull the undertray off when I get home, and see 2 holes towards the back of the block. Pieces of aluminum were laying on it Dont know what to say right now, all of you FI guys running more power and for MUCH longer than the 3000 miles this kit lasted on my car are lucky. This goes to show even when you take all precautions the car gods arent always on your side. Ill post pics later. Thanks to Charles (Integrity on the boards) for not going to the Z meet and shooting the $hit with me on the side of the road while we waited for a tow truck and then greiving with me with some beers and shots...

In an Arnold voice "ll be back"
Sorry to hear that man. I know how much time, money, sweat, beer, etc. you put in the z. I was thinking of going FI later on, but the more I read about these blown motors, it keeps me second guessing. Good luck in the future bert!!

Doesn't TN have a warranty? How long have you had your turbo on? Sorry I didn't read entire post, but maybe warranty can cover some loss?

With the $$$ Im about to spend, I cant help but feel like I should have built off the bat. I took the money for the rebuild and invested in UTEC, fuel return, tuning, ignition and hoped for the best. You read about guys with issues many times they didnt do their research, didnt have guages, didnt tune their cars, I did it all right, and to see it only lasted 3000 miles is depressing the more I think about it. Its expensive as hell to do FI in this car reliably, your talking around $20K for a turbo kit, forged internals, labor tuning. Add cams, valvetrain, clutch/fw, guages and your suddenly WAY past what you want to spend. I was planning on doing a rebuild just not now, ughh

Yes TN has a GREAT warranty but not towards engine failure-its for any parts that come with the kit, many members have used their no hassle warranty but it doesnt apply to me. I dont blame Turbonetics one bit, Im making conservative numbers and Im still 160whp above my baseline stock. You cant expect any company to warranty something like that....I finished install of my kit January 1st 2006 with the help of two friends in my garage. Little more than 6 months and 3000 miles later (it wasnt my daily driver) my engine bent me over.

oh, speaking of which, bert, i had an idea. i know you love your car but taking your car back to stock. sell all the aftermarket stuff and your car and buy this.

https://my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?t=162565

$36k is the asking price right now but he is willing to take any reasonable offer.

not bad for a fully built greddy TT. im sure your LE's would look great on liquid aluminum. sell the challenges for 2k. just a thought.

Damn dude, you were my inspiration on building my Z NA and then going FI with a TN Single as well. But I think Ill have to hold off on the turbo, after seeing this and realizing my Z is my daily car, a low 13/high 12 sec 1/4 mile is more than good enough for me. Time for Project Mu brakes.

Man sorry to hear about your bad luck dude, god luck with the rebuild,, but Ive heard in a comment on this thread that alot of cars seem to go as the temps get warmer,, Ive also heard that UTEC is not self-adjusting to temperature changes, could this be the problem here? I was thinking about going FI with my Z but I cannot afford to blow my motor at this point in time, solely bc of the rebuild cost. I truly think this motor was not designed at all to handle FI. Let me know about the UTEC comment though

UTEC does have a temp compensation feature. A/F's were good though so I dont attribute this to the tune being bad, it was right on and very conservative...

Just an FYI - anyone looking to forget about car problems for a bit should try watching the movie Casino and taking a drink anytime someone cusses. I gaurentee you will get wrecked.

Bert, we've got to get together sometime this week. I've got a check for you for that bumper, should help some with your rebuild budget.

So true-great idea for a drinking game man. Let me know what day this week, any $$ surely will help.
