Senty-the car detonated on the stock TN flash thats why I went with the UTEC, injectors, fuel system, and tune. I had experienced inaudible detonation before while datalogging but that was due to bad gas, after the tune the car didnt detonate and ran great.

See thank got I got lucky and didnt need a new block or any head work.

Man, I love your attitude about the whole thing..."I'll be back"...haha

Sorry to hear about your motor, but at least you're not pussing out and going back to stock and selling, with your tail between your legs.

REAL MEN BUILD

Good luck.

sorry to hear that. I hope you'll be back soon!

I'm counting my blessing so far...fortunately I have 15k set aside for when that day arrives but I'm hoping I'll last through the summer

Good luck on the build, hate to see crap like this happen to FI members. If you had to do it over again, would you have built the motor earlier? I'm trying to learn from your experience, and I have been toying with building my motor for the past 4 months.

I've got the APS ST, and thought it might be cheaper to send the core back and build the engine to save a few bucks. Blowing the motor would add a few thousand price tag on top of that.

NOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! (Pauses to catch breath)
NOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Wow this sucks. Part of the reason I don't want to go FI soon, well, that and I don't have the money for it now. lol

I'm going to try and wait a year or two until all the kinks with FI are worked out with our motors before taking the dive.

But, RIP Alberto's VQ motor. You will be sorely missed at the track. (Especially when I hold up the trophy that Alberto would have won if his car was running) lol j/k

In the words of that announcer guy, "You can rebuild it. You can make it faster, stronger. We have the technology!"

IMO (and I'm just talking out loud), if you wait for "kinks" like Alberto experienced to get worked out, you could be waiting a very long time (I don't see Nissan going to forged components to appease the aftermarket any time soon). Bert did everything you're supposed to do to a stock block to promote longevity at the power-levels he was seeing (except maybe meth injection). The only way to help prevent rod-failure from the get-go, and even then it's no guarantee, is to build the block pre-FI. As Bert said, you gotta pay to play, and one of the ways you pay is by assuming a certain amount of risk that things will go wrong no matter how carefully you plan.

I'm with you though....RIP AlbertoVQ35DET.

As everyone has said sorry for the loss.

How many pulls down the 1/4 did you do? You had 3k miles, but you're a dragsters the 1/4 pulls must have put much more additional stress on the internals than just being boosted.

Being boosted is one thing, punshing the internals is another. I'm not saying the motor was destined to blow, but if you ride the motor and tune to it's limit it's most likely reducing it's longevity. My motor blew recently so I know the pain. You've definately got the right attitude to overcome it!!!

In memoriam.... Alberto's VQ35DET June 2006. She ran hard, she ran strong, but in the end, it was just too good to be true and she couldn't take it anymore. She will always be remembered as the little blue (no pun intended Bert) motor that could. Donations for the funeral can be sent to Bert's paypal. LOL

Ohhh, but I can't wait to see whats next.

Nexx-I could never sell my car man, Im gonna pass this one down to a son hopefully one day, if he can drive it, if not Im getting buried in it[/QUOTE]

Amen bert! Ever since my mom drove home a '79 280zx when I was 10 years old, I've been a Z-man for life! My first Z was a '85 turbo I bought when I got my first job after high school. I had to sell it after only 2 years. But I vowed one day I would own a new Z. So here I am years later living my dream! There's just something about Z's I will always love!!

Sorry for the loss dude. Building and bettering is always fun, but it sucks doing it so impromptue.

People shouldnt get scared off though. U were obviously pushing the limits with ur build. 10psi is alot of boost for a stock motor. It only needs to detonate ONCE for the engine to be destroyed. We run cast pistons and NA rods, they dont take punishment like forged gear. One bit of detonation can cause a stress fracture and it only takes time for that to worsen. Thinking an NA engine can take detonation while maintaining a huge power level is the wrong way to think. Judging by ur MPH id say u were making a bit over 400whp.

I can tell u the key to a great FI build.
1) Install kit of choice with APS-like fuel system/management
2) Tune car on a dyno after inital startup. No running around on basemaps or pre-tunes.
3) Be happy with a power level around 380whp MAX - ~8psi on these large turbos.

Oh man, those pics were like someone punching me in my *****.

Something I think about when I drive is something like that happening, funny how it didn't strike me before going boost... Until after the fact.

And like everyone here, sorry to hear and see this happen.

Thankfully you were close to home and not far off somewhere out of the middle of no where.

Along with looking forward to the future of your car.

I was thinking recently that I did not have the funds to continue this hobby ( with wanting to buy my first home), and that the last thing I need is a blown motor without the ability to quickly get a new built block.

But I look and stare at my car... See all the nice Z's on this site, and what folks have been able to do with them.

And with Sharif moving to GA, changed my mind so I am with you on wanting to keep the car and one day maybe handing it down to LiL Peking

Good luck bro, and keep us posted

Jon

Alberto,

Is there any way you can weld those engine wall parts back? Then you don't have to get the block.
Regarding crankshaft, and pistons: maybe there are somebody out there that can rebuild them?

tahahehehahaha! i think thats a little unsafe.

Its weird that your car blew while not even pushing it. I'm starting to believe more and more our cars blow because of uneven hotspots in the block causing spots of superheating of coolant which would cause points of detonation. You also said it happened around 3k RPM, which is one of the highest load points b/c of VTC.

Good luck with teh build, you're just gonna go faster with a built block..lol.

Yes I would build again, or at least I would have bought another block sooner and started building it up as I drove on the stock block.

I had about 15 FI 1/4 passes and about 50 N/A passes. My best day with my boosted Z came in 87 degree heat, it was the MIR track day (about 12 passes that day many back to back) video footage of runs in order--> Click here to see Video

dbtrackz33@yahoo.com for paypal donations I made a mark in the FI world in her short life, it was a great motor, no oil burning issues, no nothing. Second run ever boosted down the 1/4 I had my 11 sec slip Ill never forget doing it with all my local Z buds at the track

Thanks for the kind words to everybody, we have a nice tight knit Z community here, without a doubt best forum Ive ever been a part of....
