the tc is supposed to lock at 2900 rpms (the stall rating for the stock tc). i don't understand how it could be "locking" past 4k rpms. Further, in 4th and 5th gear, past some certain speed, there is supposed to be electronic locking (so even if you're cruising below 2900 rpms, the tc will be locked).
Maybe the TC is "slipping"? That would make more sense to me. But the fluid coupling should still be there - unless something is broken inside (fins), I wouldn't think it would be possible for it to cause that dyno chart...
Anyway Andre takes the stock TC apart for the upgrade - be interested to know what he finds...

Wish you weren't doing the swap, the more high power motor setups on 5ATs the more pressure can be applied for this tranny to get some more support.
You guys will probably understand the stuff pictured here more than I do.
This is what Level 10 sells as an internals upgrade for the RE5R05A. Again I don't know what is what in these pictures.

Just before Christmas I had my transmission taken out and this kit put in. The shop that VRT uses did the work. I got it back and after about 1k miles I took it to the drag strip. Made it thru a day at Cal Speedway and than made a trip to Irwindale Speedway for 1/8 mile racing.
Snapped an axle at Irwindale and had the tranny pulled out and sent in for inspection. The tranny shop said everything was still good. In auto mode the tranny with this kit feels much more solid, before this I would never ever accelerate very fast in auto because I don't trust the downshifts the tranny does during boost which is where I think most of the damage will happen.
I haven't dyno'd since getting this stuff done but we do plan on turning up the boost and seeing what it can hold. I have a second tranny we'll probably be experimenting with. Getitng a pan spacer made is one item, the tranny shop took measurements and is planning on getting a kevlar band made, they also said the seals in this tranny looked like a weak point after the band.

Thanks Rookie. After doing extensive research and having conversations with IPT, Level 10, Edge Racing, Alto, Raybestos, HPP, etc. I grew increasely frustrated with the lack of significant development in upgrades that will hold upwards of 600+ whp. Even though I may not hit those levels with a high boost tune I want my tranny to hold that much power for any margin of error. I do plan to continue research and hopefully we all make some head way on advancing the 5AT. I believe HPP Racing right now is doing the most extensive testing and will probably isolate key weaknesses that may lead to advances.
From your posts it does seem like you've done a lot of the foot work, which is a loss for us. Dealing with the 5AT is so dam frustrating at times.
Sorry this turned into a 5AT thread, you having Sharif there and having made a lot of contacts it turned out that way. Your Z is beautiful, having beastly power to the ground will make it that much better.

I am actually looking at picking up Gurgens built tranny with the TC and VB upgraded but it is currently waiting on Alto to come out with the better clutch packs but Gurgen called me and said that this may not happen anytime soon (lack of demand I think) so I am deciding on what I should do, on the other hand I don't think mine was slipping as once it starts to slip then it is not long after that the tranny goes out, mine has been doing this hesistation for about 5 months now.
Not trying to make this into a clutch thread either but for us 5AT guys this is the last hurdle I think.

We could not get a good dynojet run at all. When Sharif posts the graph you'll be able to see and I'm sure he could explain better.

1500 -1700 for tranny with warranty good to 1500 hp/tq, 400 flexplate, 300 adapter, and 1 000 000 for the install (what a *****) hehe jk
definitely a winning combo for still less than an upgraded tranny, plus you could sell your stock auto, plus all the upgrades you have so far and have one of the sickests cars around because you will be able to put that power down and it WILL shift...
i mean, the third gear is just like your 4th gear in your auto, so its not too bad, plus the newer trannies have overdrive, i am looking into stuff right now

+1 on the above... If you're going to stick with an auto tranny on a boosted VQ, this just seems to be the safest and most stout approach. Especially considering that if you can recess the shifter and give it a stock look...

Hey Ron, could you post some pics of your rear? I'd like to see how the EVO TT looks on your Z. Also, how did you like the Tein CS coilovers? I see you switched but I'm only looking for a slight upgrade in handling and lower stance.
TIA
