Default My new oil catch can...

Here are some pictures of my new oil catch can which is almost complete:

Vacuum is connected to the center hole and the outer hole that goes to the corkscrew goes to the valve cover. Still have to tack on a bracket and mount a sight glass for oil level.

I also wanted to mention that the "corkscrew" is sweated in so it will not allow oil or air to flow between it and the tube since there is about .004" worth of interferance between the two prior to being welded.

It is about the same size as the small Greddy oil catch cans and a bit longer I think. It is 8" long.

As some of you know we mostly run oil catch cans on our cars and not really a true excepted version of an air oil seperator. Air oil seperators generally have the inlet at an angle and are large in diameter and tall in order to create a swirling effect and offer a dead space to slow the air down. Often with some sort of horizontal baffles with holes in various locagtions to make the air travel further and give more time for seperation. I am just testing this out to see if this is a happy medium between the two types.

If this were a really high boost motor it would become more of a problem since the oil vapor essentially reduces the octane rating of the gas entering the engine.

I have not really seen a design like this because
1. It would be expesive to produce on a production level
2. hard to fabricate out of sheet metal

Figured I would give it a try.

Quamen, you are doing some great stuff. Are the inlet/outlet plastic and how are they attached? Is the body of the catch can CNC or is it pipe? I wish I had your skills.

Right now I just have some plastic fitting on it since they were all the local store had for picture purposes and I was able to bend them up enough to rotate them over the other fitting. I am buying some brass swivel barb fittings to take car of this problem though.

The tube is just aluminum extruded pipe as there was no reason to really cnc it.

Thank you all for the great comments!

Check out the DIY section there are some pics of my upper manifold which has been welded up. My Amsoil filter and some aluminum tubing come in on Monday along with my Bell Intercooler!!!!

You all know what that means... the front end of my car and the intake tract are whats next on the list! I just have to get the groove tool for the crank pulley and get that finished.

Has anyone really had anything in there catch can? Like more than a table spoon between oil change intervals. The more people I talk to, they have nothing at all. Most of them had them for years and all were FI. None were built motors though.

If you have a stock engine I would think that you would obviously have less than a boosted engine but I think that the Z has fairly minimal blowby in comparison to some of the older cars out there.

Either way, I spent like $15 on this thing plus my time. If it never fills up... GREAT! If it does... Great thing I made it then. That $75 I saved will help me get some aluminum tubing for my intake tract (not that I have to scrounge for $75 lol).

I guess the whole purpose behind eveything that I am making is just to show the Z community my perspective. There are a ton of brilliant people on this forum who have amazing ideas and very few of them have the ability or the resources to make those ideas happen. So in my eyes, as one of the few who does have the capabilities and resources it is beneficial for the Z community that I use them.
