UPDATE:
I studied the diagrams and compared them to what is sitting on my workbench... the part that broke is the "3rd counter gear"

Now that is a great illustration!

maybe rebuilding with a new counter gear that has been cryoed and prayed over by monks???

The engagement tooth ring/gear is brazed to the main body of the gear with copper (in this case, sometimes they use bronze, brass, etc). Many OEMs do this as a"fuse" - breaking the gear in this fashion is better than shredding the teeth off the gear which will take out both the 3rd input gear and 3rd counter gear and likely take out other gears as well as ruin bearings, etc. This way, if it breaks, it just breaks itself and there is no other carnage.
Hah at least my 6th gear is going out first. 25k miles on the tranny and 6th gear grind wtf. Those gears are probably made of hardend steel. You can weld it with an arc welder and get it really really really hot.
the synchronizer wearing out has absolutely nothing to do with the strength of the gear nor the gear breaking. they are two separate and unrelated problems. All gears are made out of hardened steel, otherwise they'd wear out. getting gear steel really really hot isn't the best idea...

thx for the call Sam, good talking to you... when your gears are tested and released, they will definately be the best option...
