Question Greddy Turbo Upgrade

I am just putting a feeler out there to see how those of you that are using the upgraded 20G internals on the 18G turbos that the kit comes with is holding up. I have also heard of some guys running a 60-1 wheel in these things...

In talking to Sharif and BamBam they have not had much success with this upgrade as far as reliability is concerned. I am wanting to find out if this is true accross the board or if it is just that particular shop and the upgrade they are making to the turbos for these guys.

Mine are on the way out after 2.5 years of steady beat down and I hate to pull the engine just to replace the 18Gs with the same thing... But one the other hand I don't want to have to pull the engine again in 3000-5000 miles because the 20G upgrades are not relaible. I am getting a puff of blue smoke on decel after a hard pull and starting to notice oil residue in the intercooler piping... I can probably make it til the end of the fall, but that may be pushing it.

Also I have found that SGP, Forced Performance, and Turbochargers.com are doing these upgrades... Which is the best place to contact? Any others out there?

I would like to be able to crank it upto 700whp on the Forged heart breaker dyno and not be at the limits of the turbochargers. I am making 643whp right now @ 18.5psi with pump/meth. I could get there on the std 18gs but I think they will wear out pretty fast doing that. A 20G wheel should help in not having to work the turbo as hard to get to 650-700whp.

Thanks in advance for your comments!

I know a few cars that SGP has built that run 20Gs...never heard anything about premature failure on any of the cars running them. emepher had 20G upgrades that he had SGP do....you might PM him. He sold his car not too long ago.

I would like to hear more about the 60-1 in the 18G housing....that's news to me.

He's addicted.

When I saw your thread, the first thing that came to mind was Sharif's and Brent's setup. I remember Sharif telling me he had no luck with the upgraded Greddy twins. That the ones that came with the kit were fine. But the bigger ones always had issues.

I too would be interested to know if others have this problem. Turbochargers.com does the rebulds for us, and we have nothing but trouble with them. Brent's turbos were done elsewhere...not sure where. Todd Pickman also had a set of upgraded greddy's poop out.

The fact is, some people push their cars harder than others, so it might just be a cause of going too nuts with our cars.

excessive shaft play, bad shafts, bad wheels...you name it. I have destroyed 2 sets of them. Each time...its something different, or a combination of issues.

Just funny becuase I never had a problem with any standard Greddy turbos.

That might be the problem, I have heard many mixed, mainly bad comments on them, never used them.

why don't you try majestic turbo instead of turbo kits .com. They are not a turbo wholesale house like turbo kits .com.

is the 3-bolt turbine inltet housing an exclusive to the Greddy/mitsubishi turbos? regular mitsubishi turbos usually have 4-bolt turbine inlets.

Yeah I think the 3-bolt is pretty much exclusive to the Greddy/mitsu turbos
