Arrow Swapping a fully built revup engine into a non-revup Z?!!

A friend of mine is parting out his Z and want to sell a fully sleeved built long block from a revup Z. my question is, I have a Z with a non-revup engine, if I swap my engine with his (including swapping factory ECU's), will that work?

my 2nd question is, can I just buy his revup short block? will it attach to my non-revup heads?

thanks in advance..

you'd also need the harness for a revup motor. the revups have at least 4 more electrical plugs on the motor than the regular VQ motor.

the easier thing to do would be to change the front timing cover and use the exhaust timing gears from a standard VQ. then, you should be able to drop the revup motor into your non-revup z.....I may be over simplifying this, but it shouldn't be too hard if you don't want to have the variable exhaust cam timing.

With a Haltech Platinum you could swap the whole motor over with the addition of 4 connectors (two for exhaust cam position, two for exhaust cam magnet)

If you wanted to swap shortblocks, yes this is possible as well

can you just leave the exhaust timing system unplugged and keep the stock ECU?

You can but your power curve will suck since the motor wont be running the correct timing on the exhaust side all the time.

You also run the risk of having the valve come in contact with the piston since these motors overlap.

I wouldn't think it would be that extreme

the valves won't hit the pistons. I have played around with unplugging the exhaust cam phasers on my revup....there were no ill effects.

in reply to a PM I recieved from from Dubai (who is following this thread but his PM inbox is full ).........

Abdulla,

If you leave the exhaust cam phasers unlplugged, I believe they will be in a fully retarded position which will cause you to lose some lower and midrange power, but the top end should remain the same.

Of course, you can always swap your front cover, cam gears and covers to the revup engine. Just leave the rear exhaust cam timing sensors bolted into the back of the heads (to keep oil from spewing out of the back of the heads.)

I haven't done it, but evertything should be fine. I have both revup heads and regular heads and there is no difference other than the hole for the cam timing sensor for the exhaust cams.

You gain more topend with them unplugged. I proved this on the dyno. It was about 10-15whp topend but from 6000-7000 rpms i lost about 20hp and 40tq low end.

So in short the revup swap is a simple swap in aslong as you keep the exhaust cam phassers unplugged. No need for a rev up ecu?

Reading this thread and trying to follow along...
I am doing the reverse.
Pulling my non-revup twin turbo motor and putting the twin turbo on a revup and putting that in.
What is needed for this ? Like to take advantage of the exhaust variable timing on the revup if possible.

you will probably need an ECU and harness from a revup to use the EVT
