Default Tranny build for more power?

I'd like to know from anyone here with some experience what all is done to our auto trannys to hold more power/torque. After a valve body is done (which I have), is it pretty much just the clutch packs?

According to SGP Racing's website they said they have clutch Packs, bands, stators to be put into the trannys. I possibly have someone here in Vegas that can do a build for me, I just need to know what I really need, and bring it all to him to complete. Can anyone shed some light on this for me, and if possible show me where to buy some stuff? Thanks a bunch.

I have an SGP tranny. It's currently getting shipped back to them for a repair though. The thing holds serious power my car is putting down about 530RWHP. Not sure what's up with the tranny but it stopped delivering power to the wheels so I'm guessing the TC went bad. These guys are great though they committed to fixing it under warranty. While I am having issues I'd say if your gonna do the work of a valvebody upgrade you may as well spring for this or GTM's up'd tranny that is allready done. After talking to SGP it sounds like they have the entire thing redone and there are a lot of upgrade parts. Not sure on the GTM I can't even get those guys to return a call to buy stuff so I've avoided them.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm not looking to go to a shop or any recommendations. I just need to know what parts are done for a full tranny build so I can buy them myself and take them to who I am going to have build mine. I already have an SGP valve body, I just need to get whatever else is required.

Here you go........http://www.altousa.com/np136.pdf

You will need the Alto Red Eagle/Kolene parts. Both sets of the packs(direct&input).According to Alto the Red Eagles should be good up to 650whp.Check into the bands also. GTM and SGP do some other modifications to upgrade the tranny but "its their little secrets" and they won't tell.It has something to do with a piston IIRC.
ALTO also has OEM replacement packs, so make sure you get the Red Eagles.I think they describe them as high performance packs.

There is a member here who did the upgrades himself but I can't remember his screen name.

Good Luck...its not that hard.

Have you considered the th400 tranny

Its something to do with the piston applying more pressure per square inch on the clutch packs. IIRC means "If I Remember Correctly". That link is for the Nissan 350z and G35 and the parts #'s should be listed for you.
th400 is a tranny for guys that run big whp. Also theres the th350 and its for the same thing. th400 is a 4 speed auto and th350 is a 3 speed auto

I PMd him and he said he installed the ALTO parts but he thinks he did something wrong as it won't go into 4th or 5th. He thinks he did something g wrong on the install. He's not even running it right now, so I wonder if he'll be able to help.

Maybe GTM or some other shops here can give me some input? Tell me your secrets

Don't count on any of the shops to give you there secrets. The only way you will get them is if you buy a tranny from them and take it apart to see what they did.

coachk,

What do you think of getting the ALTO parts and trying to hold about 500whp? Would it be a good decision to just do that, or would a shop be worth it? I have a Nissan Master Tech here in Vegas that will do it for cheeeeap so thats why I made this thread.

I think its worth a try. The Alto web site says the clutchpacks can handle alot more than 500 and they don't make any mention of "ANY LITTLE SECRETS". My tranny (VB & TC upgrade only) made 470whp before it started to slip. Do it and let us know because I need to do something so I can unleash my built motor After its done give us a full report....

The Alto person I spoke with did mention that the apply piston is small.

In regards to my try at the DIY install. Gears 1,2,3 worked fine and they are in the mid clutch pack assembly. Gears 4,5 would not engage, they are in the front clutch pack assembly. I am positive that it was an install error and not an Alto part issue. I should have time to get into that trans this summer and see what I f'd up. For now I am enjoying the car with a stock trans, SGP VB, Pro TQ convertor, B&M cooler and external filter. It holds just fine at 0.7 bar, what ever power level that is I may get a shot at the drag strip this summer too!
