Default Thinking of going SC, some mod questions

I've had the Z for a little under a year now, and after thinking about it I'd like to go with a supercharger in the long run...probably not for another year or so though.

But I've been having the itch to mod now, so my question is, what mods can I do now that would be 'SC friendly'? I've been thinking of picking up an intake and plenum spacer.... would those be a waste when the time comes to go SC?

I assume you are talking about a centrifugal blower like the ATI, Vortech, or HKS...not the Stillen?

If it's the Stillen, I wouldn't do much since you can't tune it all to compensate for mods.

For the centrifugal blowers, you can do most of the N/A stuff and it will benefit you - exhaust, headers, plenum spacer, etc. But you would have to dump the intake when you get the S/C. This is a blessing and a curse - you can get more power out of the setup with breathing mods, but you can spend a hell of a lot of money on top of the S/C too!

EDIT: Best place to start would be here - https://my350z.com/forum/forced-indu...questions.html

I actually did read through that... couldn't find the answer to my exact question, but I did learn a lot of good stuff. As of now Vortech is my SC of choice, BTW.

So really best bet is no intake? Not even a pop charger or something like that?
Not that it's a big deal, just wondering. Looks like I'll be picking up a plenum insert soon...

any other ideas for pre-SC mods?

You can pick up a used pop-charger for now if you want, then sell it when you get the S/C.

The only mods I did besides the S/C were plenum spacer, high-flow cats, and exhaust. No real need to get anything else unless you want to go all out. A lot of people run the Vortech with nothing else done to the motor, except for maybe a cat-back exhaust. But it doesn't hurt to do test pipes or HFC's, headers, new plenum, etc. etc.

EDIT: But be careful - there is plenty of money to be spent on S/C supporting mods such as gauges, fuel system, catch cans, clutch, etc. It all adds up really quickly, so don't blow your wad before you even get the S/C installed

get a good exhaust system, nismo header, test pipes, plenum spacer, and clutch and flywheel upgrade for now till your vortech decision comes.

exhausts with some sort of crossover connection that connects both sides IMO is best for NA or vortech

everything behind the MAF is pretty much fair game.

always having to watch my temp spike is a drag. makes me feel guilty for gettin on it.. and you have to wait for it to cool to get on it again.

does an oil cooler really make that much of a difference? i mean its hard to think that something half the size of a keyboard can actually keep it cool lol.

big difference, especially if oil is going to be doing double duty cooling the hotter running engine with FI as well as the blower - assuming you run a non-V3 blower

They make a huge difference. So much so that if you dont use a thermostatically controlled sandwich plate or add in a tstat inline, you will have a hard time ever getting your oil temps up to optimum during normal driving.

sure, why not. Centrifugal blowers make no power down low, and neither do big exhaust, so you really wont be doing any spirited driving in those rev ranges anyhow.

should work ok

IMO a true dual isn't ideal for NA or supercharger though. Some sort of X/H/Y pipe I think works better with a non-turbo setup

If you are thinking of going with the Stillen SC... You have to PM Doug. There is no one on my350Z or G35driver that knows more about the Stillen setup more than Doug...I would not doubt if it was said that Doug help design the Stillen SC

I'd recommend headers, HFC's (or test pipes) and a TD exhaust. The more air you're cramming into the car with FI, the more efficiently you'll need to get it back out.

lol +1
go vortech if u go supercharger.... strup headers(best fitment/price IMO), 2.5 high flow cats since blowers like a bit of backpressure and almost any exhaust would be fine...plenum spacer for sure....
