I think this is a legitimate area of interest, the RB26DETT's were 1,500,000 yen in Japan too when the R34's first came out yet these engines found their way into all sorts of vehicles.

The real question is what system besides MOTEC will manage a VR38 and how to mate it up to the 350Z tranny, and how much frame modification (hopefully none?) is necessary.

I'm sure someone is engaging this project at this time - I'd like to find out who.

Cheers

I thought the the VR38 had to mated to the GTR transmission and how r u going to fit that in the Z chassis?

As far as I've read, it's not possible to mate a VR38tt to a Z/G transmission. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong).

A RB/LS or built HR/VHR swap would be easier and cost a lot less than what you are asking, and would be just as reliable if done correctly imho.

If you really want a VR38tt, trade in your Z and buy a GTR.

Yup - those are the exact questions that I am asking. Will the VR38 fit? And how to mate it to the transmission? I'm certain it's possible to mate to the transmission - it just might take a custom flywheel / clutch (look at the pic).

So that is my question - anyone attempting this build?

Thx

You are aware that the RB26DETT were produced for ten years before the R34 came out

yes, VR38's are available and no, it need not cost you $25k

The fact of the matter is that if you have the pockets (and skill level if doing it yourself) to complete a swap like this....you know the rest

Hell i think its a great idea. Im sure within the next 5 to 7 years the VR38DETT will be alot cheaper and the swap will become as common as the Rb swaps are now. Fact is that it just takes time. I will def be looking into this swap as soon as the Z is paid for.

As if RB swaps into 350Z's are so common now? I know of 3. Swaps in these cars, regardless of engine type, are the furthest thing from common at this point. Perhaps in the future that will change, who knows. I don't think the price of a VR GTR engine will dip much below it's current level on the second hand market, because they are so limited in availability in the first place. Far more limited than the RB was.

Any swap is possible - you're limited by the same things anyone else is limited to. No matter if it's an RB, or VR, or rotary or any other engine concoction....or any other major build for that matter. It takes generous and equal amounts of budget, time and skill to successfully complete any swap or major project/build.

i wasnt talking about thw RB swap into the Z. I was just saying th RB swap in general. 7 to 10 years is a long time for the price to come down. Im sure by then there will be the next gen of GTR motors will be out and the VR will be replaced by something new. technology is constantly changing.

If anything the LS swap will be the norm in about 5 years just like the 240sx guys. They have an entire website dedicated to V8 240's. The Z will become that type of car as the car gets older and putting FI on the stock block won't be as a cost effective option because your motor is going to go at some point. So why not stick with an N/A application that will put out similar numbers to a stock block FI setup and not worry about grenading your motor.
