Default Return System: Gauge reading "0"

Hey guys. We recently upgraded the fuel system prepping it for FI so now it's a return type system. However I noticed when I start the car and fuel is low, the gauge will read zero. Not ----- dashes, but 0. Before this was done, I've never seen 0, even when I ran my car straight out of gas. I'm thinking maybe the float is a bit damaged or somthing. No idea. It doesn't stay at 0 but I don't feel the reading is as accurate. Has this happened to you guys before?

Also, I'll have intermittent fuel smells now and then. It's definately not constant but it's enough to worry me..

Any ideas?

where is the gauge mounted? what fuel system is it?

you should have the gauge mounted in the regulator.

Check the electrical connections on the fuel assembly. Will need to pull it back out.

I'm sorry guys. I meant the OEM fuel gauge.

It's a homemade fuel system. We didn't rush the installation and made sure there were no leaks as far as the return line goes. Originally, when I purchased the return line, it was too short so we put a fitting in and connected 2 lines together, but that didn't turn out so we replaced the entire line. I checked all fittings and there was no residue on/around them. We'll double check this weekend.

When I re-installed the assembly, I double checked everything and was pretty careful w/ the electrical wiring. Also checked the gasket where the lid goes on, everything seems to be in place. Also took a look at the FPR, once again, nothing.

Could somthing be wrong w/ the pump?

Luie had a similar gas smell issue from what it sounds like. Here is the link to his thread and the fix:

Hope this helps with part of your issue.

Just realized his was a leak and not an odor - sorry.

You probably damaged the sending unit. Its about a 100 dollar part from Nissan.

Its a common problem on peoples first experience with 350z fuel buckets.

Good luck.

I was going to make a post about my fuel gauge issue but as you have one I just want to post a question, my car has started to develop a fluctauting needle, it sometimes says I have half a tank then goes down to a quarter and then 20 miles later goes back up.....just started happening so I am not sure what is going on.

Car has 110,000 miles so could the sending unit have just gone bad??

Update on fuel smell:

Turns out when we were pulling the assembly in and out, we must've gotten some fuel on the EVAP line so whenever that line purged itself, some fuel came out with it. It started to happen less and less and haven't smelt it for a while now. So looks like that problem fixed itself.

As for the fuel gauge reading "0", still haven't figured out the issue yet but I'm thinking maybe it's got somthing w/ the car being at a bit of an incline while tank is close to empty... Not sure about that one yet though..

Gonna have to check the sending unit this weekend.....

ya but that only has a mileage gauge? if the float was messed up like the OP is considering, that would only effect the actual level gauge... ultimately the OP needs to tell us what gauge they are even looking at.... it could be a digital wideband, a boost gauge, a ???

what gauge are you talking about?

I think she might be confusing the 0mph as 0 gas... when I start my car up that particular gauge show ----(dashes) and then goes to 0mph.

I'm not confusing the 0mph as 0dte.

Got the sending unit checked out this weekend, all is fine. Turns out the reading must've been from when I was parked at an incline.
