Default Dilemma

So I have a dilemma. My car recently started smoking/burning oil randomly out of the drivers side exhaust. I have AAM true dual exhaust so I knew it was related to only that side of the motor. For a while it was could and go randomly and only once in a blue moon. For the past 3 weeks now its been happening quite often and when it does its very heavy and lasts for a good 5 minutes. Yesterday me and my brother did a compression check and all the cylinders checked between 171-180psi which is on par with nissan standards. However when we were looking into the lower runner we noticed oil on top of the valves of cylinder number 2. I called Dave @ FT and a few other shops and asked them what they thought of oil being on top of the valves and the consensus is that I have a bad valve seal. Now in order to replace/fix the seal I have to remove the head, which means removing the front timing cover, which is easiest done by removing the motor. So what Im thinking is that while the motor is out I might as well leave it out and put in rods and pistons into the bottem end at the same time. Pretty much Im just looking for feedback on if its the best thing to do it now and just wait a little longer to get it back since I dont have all the $ for a build now, or wait to replace/fix the seal and build it, but also run the risk of it getting worse.

Build it!! You'll just have to take it back apart again if you don't do it now.

Why do you have to remove the head to replace the seal. You can do it while its still in. You just make sure the pistons is close to TDC so the valve doesnt fall in.

and since this is probably a couple of valves, this will take less than 200 bucks for repair. you cant compaire 200 to 4000

Hey jon, sorry i couldnt be more help on the phone without seeing the car. i doubt it is a bad valve seal. Do that leakdown test and see what you come up with.

Of course, give us a call if you have any questions.

Ill be doing the leakdown on Saturday so after that we'll decide something. But if its not a bad valve seal, and not the bottem end, what else could cause it to be burning oil? Where would the oil be coming from?

I have seen just the oil rings get messed up and still have decent compression/leakdown and cause the car to smoke.

Jon - seeing as how you are getting several different diagnosis of your issue over the interwebs, you may want to just choose a shop and make 100% sure what the issue is, then decide if you want to DIY fix or not. Although, now that I think about it your car may already be somewhat disassembled.

Maybe finish pulling the motor and just take the motor to either AAM, F:T or Hill's for inspection - we can transport via my delivery van if needed, or in your CR-V. Hope you get it sorted out soon. - Cass
