Default Experimenting continues

Well, winter is here and I am playing around when I have some spare time. This is the latest in my never ending search for the perfect wastegate dump/recirculation plumbing. (I have now found the perfect solution)

I really wanted to have an economical option to give the customer both, an open dump tube and the choice to recirculate wastegate exhaust gases back in to the down pipe.

This is the latest:

This flexible exhaust tubing is made for just that, exhaust systems. It is tough as nails, flexible and can easily be removed.

I will make plugs to go with the kit. The plug will be a 1.5" piece of solid stainless tubing, 1" long with the end welded shut. So if you want to go with an open dump, just slide the flex down towards the down pipe, put the plug in and clamp it down. Very simple. This does not change the kit price, but you have both options available.

Just trying to provide the best option. Care to elaborate to share your thought on the flex?

It is rated for exhaust but won't even see much of it, as it will only flow though there once the system is under boost.

It traps water and grime in the bends of the flex and rusts horribly if its not SS, even the SS wears after awhile and holes start to show through. I have use this stuff on old cars I have worked on. I would never use this in a boosted application, the thin parts of the flexible metal would become brittle over time due to the heat exposure.

You are better off if you want to offer options, is to make two style w/g tubes, and a down-pipe that has a block off plate, and use v/bands...

Slight update/change. The FMIC will be changing, it will now be slightly larger as well. Old core was 25x6x3.5, and the new one is 24x7x3.5. I finally got one in and got a chance to test fit it, the brackets had to be changes slightly (very minor change) and it does fit well. There will be no price change, and now a couple of pics:

Old vs new:

3" inlet and 3" outlet:

Installed:

The entire core is still exposed:

I am also hoping some other parts get here before the holidays so I can get the new TT build going. For now, I have one Garrett GT2860 turbo on the way, and that is all I am missing. The IC piping, flanges, exhaust piping..ect are all here already. Look for a build thread in the near future, as usual tons of pics and details.

what does this new core change?

You made it shorter but wider. I thought the more rows you had the greater the effect on cooling verses the length between endcaps. Isn't that the reason for using a vertical core?

I know you only dropped an inch off the width so i'm curious what the changes should do.

As far as performance goes, there would not be much of a difference. The volume of the old FMIC is 525 cubic inches, and the new one has 588, so about a 10% difference between the two.

I had availability issues with the other FMIC, so I found a more reliable supplier that will build these to my specs.

That was the reason rolling around in my head when you said you changed it and the dimensions didn't seem to make it that much more of a performance issue.

Availability is always a good thing

Just thought I update a couple of small thing in this thread since it still gets a few visits.

It was brought to my attention that a couple of people had a bit of a hard time reaching one of the bolts on the driver side header (3-bolt flange). I made a small revision, and now it is easy to reach it with a 14mm (9/16") socket. In the picture below you can see what I mean (bolthole on the bottom).

Top is old, bottom is new:

One customer brought up the OEM power steering cooler, and the fact that it can be a PITA to relocate it with the OEM hard lines. As always, I listen to feedback and now include a simple bracket with a few feet of rad hose to alleviate this issue:

It is simple, and easy to install.

I have also made a change to the down pipes. No performance improvements, just easier for me to duplicate:

A couple of orders came in this week so I had to build up stock again:

Shot of the day :
